Arrow Offering updates for your guides.

Note: I don't really get to my point until the last paragraph, so skip to it if you don't want to read this whole post.

If you are a regular member on here, there is a good chance you have seen me mention my (absolutely amazing) guide on updating your IOS's. I don't mean to brag (since I am by far the most humble person in the world), but I think it has been useful for a lot of people.

It started out only being used by a few people a day, but after Christmas it shot up to an average of 75 (based on the downloads). The thing is, I don't think so many people should need to use it. When new users ask how to mod their Wii's (4.2 and under), I usually tell them to follow Softmod ANY Wii, then use the Update Game IOS.zip pack on my guide so they can play all the latest games. I wish that users only needed to follow one guide, because I think it would be in the best interest of the user. It also makes me feel like I'm spamming every time I tell someone to use my guide.

I mentioned in this post that I made a new version of UpdatePack.zip for mauifrog's Softmod ANY Wii guide, using the IOS wads from mine. That way people could follow his guide and be finished. I have yet to receive a response from him, so I don't know if he wants it or not.

Since there are several other great softmodding guides on this forum, I thought I should go ahead and offer the same to others. If your guide contains a set of official IOS's for new games, but they aren't the from the 4.3b release, I would be happy to upload a pack with the IOS wads updated. If it contains an md5 file, I will update that too. Everything else in the pack will be untouched. Just give me a link to your current file.

PS: If you (staff and other guide creators) have time, I would like your opinion on this.

I think it benefits the user to learn to update IOS when needed and not rely on tutorials all the time. Just my opinion but I don't think the guides need to include updates for all IOS because in most cases they aren't needed.

If an IOS is needed use NUSD or search here at wiihacks, and install with WM or MMM. Or if online use DOP-Mii or MMM.

Agree with Krank here. People shouldn't use guides for everything: doing basic stuff on their own is much better. It's a nice offer nontheless.
Will sure come in handy for some people.

I understand why you and Krank feel that way, but this isn't about whether updates should be added to guides. This is for guides that already include that. If part of a guide is updating IOS's (even if it is only 5 or so), then that is what it should do. All I'm offering is to help people update the contents of their guide downloads. If guides included HBC v1.04, you shouldn't just leave it that way, arguing that people should just update it themselves.

On a (semi) separate note, IOS's aren't really a basic concept, at least for most people. From what I have read, it is something that newbies have the most trouble understanding. Perhaps it was easy for the two of you, but it took me quite awhile to understand how IOS's worked (although I later discovered that I had read a lot of incorrect information, which contributed to my confusion).

I understand you, Joostin. As I said, it will really come in handy for those in need of an update for their guide.

Well then you would need to talk to messie. That is the only softmod guide that hasn't been update to include the latest IOS.

Mauifrog's Softmod ANY Wii hasn't either. I saw another one last night, but I don't remember which one.

I think each guide should be updated by the author, if the author is no longer active then somebody else should update the guide or make a new updated guide. Did you title the thread incorrectly, it looks like you want to update guides? If all you are doing is providing a mirror download link, perhaps you should just make an apperance in the guide and make a post offering a mirror download link, or a PM to the guide author so the author can provide a mirror link.

If you are speaking of the 4.3b IOS then they aren't really needed for anything unless I'm mistaken.

My main point is that just because a guide includes the latest IOS doesn't mean it helps anyone understand IOS any better. Batch installing them with MMM doesn't either....but at least they know how to do it if it's needed.

Perhaps I didn't choose the best thread title. I'm not trying to update peoples guides for them. I just figured that, since I already used NUSD to download every non-stubbed IOS and pack them as wads (which took forever, btw), I might as well offer to upload them to mediafire for anybody who wants them. All the owner would have to do is change a link in the guide. The instructions would remain unchanged. It is a lot less work for me than for anyone who doesn't already have the wads. I could have gone through each guide, checked the IOS versions, and posted this offer if the wads were out of date. This just seemed like an easier way to find out who wanted/needed updated download packs. It doesn't seem like anyone does. Close the thread if you want, because my question has been answered.

I'm not sure if they are required by any current games either, but 4.3 ones are. Other than IOS56, none of the UpdatePack.zip versions are past 4.2.

I know it won't help anyone understand, that wasn't the point I was making. I know you don't think softmodding guides should include instructions for updating IOS's, but several guides do anyway. Not everyone wants to check if they need to install another IOS every time a new game comes out, or cares to learn how to IOS's work.

I never meant for this to become a debate on what guides should include. I thought people might appreciate my help. It's not like I am any more capable; most (if not all) of you know far more than I do on the subject of hacking. I wanted to contribute in what way I could.

PS: Reading this post may give the impression that I am upset or insulted. I'm not.
