I read in an article a while back that the lifespan this console generation was going to be longer for each of the consoles than the normal every 5+ years. Each are still very young and developers are just getting to know them better and it would be silly to ditch them for hardware upgrades at the moment after investing the money they have invested in them. I think Nintendo was going for a lifespan like they did with NES. After that announcement I read that Microsoft was going for about the same length of time with the 360.

I read something similar but I just hope they don't do a Sony and keep the Wii going for years after the next console is released.

well they did it with the gamecube, although it was backwards compatible. but the gamecube was epic so it doesnt matter. the wii hd (which will be the most likely new nintendo product to released in the next half a decade or so) will probably be released in 2011 so yeah. get her a wii. and remember, the longer you wait, the harder it will be to hack.

Actually nintendo has done that. A Fire Emblem game for SNES was release in 2001 which is roughly 5-6 years after the Nintendo 64 hit the scene.

But I dont think we will see another next gen console until after 2015 unless Sega wants to come back and take the scene by surprise.

I highly doubt Sega will make another console as it's been years since the Dreamcast was discontinued and would be quite hard for them to gain market share from the "Big 3".
