EDIT: like this example STRAIGHT off of nintendo web site: | Nintendo - Corporate Information | Legal Information (Copyrights, Emulators, ROMs, etc.)

If you read the whole Nintendo quote, you'll see that while it gives mention to the "24 hour rule", the whole thing says "Whether you own the game, or whether you delete the game within 24 hours, it is illegal to download a Nintendo game for play on a computer." This whole idea of "it's totally legal if you do this and this and this" is crazy. Yes, you do have a right to backup your games. But what Nintendo says (and what the law says) is that a backup must be in the same media as the original, ie: if you want to make a backup of an NES cart that you own, you must copy that file to an EEPROM, which must be playable on an NES.

The only issue with that idea, Vash, is the copyright disclaimers that come with each game you buy. It doesn't just state "You will not copy this", but "You will not copy, lend, rent, or lease this". They're not selling you the rights to the game: they're selling you the game, and a license to play said game on approved hardware. It's really no different than a copy of Windows, or any piece of enterprise software: you're paying primarily for the license to use the software.

That said, hell yes I'm a pirate. I didn't even pay for the Internet Channel on my Wii. My 2gig SD card is nearly packed to the gills with emus and roms. I have very little actual "homebrew" on the Homebrew Channel. However, I think it's important (especially if someone is quoting and misinterpretting Nintendo policy) to have some clarification on something like this.

Dogeggs is right, torrents are bait. You really don't know who is on the other end of that torrent that you're downloading, writing down your IP address. I'm sure I read somewhere that (in the USA) your ISP has to keep records (for 3 months) of what you do on the net. Then, by law, your ISP has to give up that information if a copyright holder has evidence that you have broken the law (downloading copyrighted material). In my case it was movies that weren't even in the theater yet. I got 3 warning letters from my ISP. So, no more torrents for me, it's just not worth the risk.

EDIT - read this, DMCA, this is 11 years old and probably been updated many times.

Torrents arent perfect but as long as you go about it sensibly and cover your back with something like PeerGuardian(as mentioned already) and dont go downloading a torrent that isnt from a reputable source(or a fake) they are fine to use.

I recognise that Usenet is really popular and fast and probably the best way to get stuff but for me personally I have a problem with paying for something that I am gonna use to steal. I want it free.

i get where you comin from boro but once you have tried usenet you won't go back to torrents, it is cheap as chips and the selection/speed is second to none. I have an Ntorrents account aka the holy grail and i hardly ever use it, it pales it comparison

I have tried the free limited trials for Usenet and I gotta say they are great. Fast as fuck and plenty of choice. I just can't get over that stigma of paying for it.
For my needs anyway, public torrents do me fine. If I had Usenet access I would probably go crazy downloading games. It almost feels like a compulsion for me.
I spend more time downloading them than I do playing them lol.
So it's probably for the best it takes me a few days to download a game.

But for all others looking for a quicker way to download and dont mind the subscription fee I would recommend Usenet for sure.
