I've read some talk about the beta ios5 having this problem, but I got hit with it and I could use some tech support on possibly retrieving them... Contacts obliterated. In the neighborhood of 150 contacts... Bummed.

@OP, when you're updating to iOS5, it does a clean wipe of your iPhone. Usually iTunes auto-backups info on the computer. Try right clicking your device in iTunes then choosing "Restore backup" and choose the latest backup.
Why is this in the iPhone news section?
Re: why this is in this section - if it's bugging you, I apologize, but I thought it is relevant if others have this issue, which is likely the case based on what I've read about beta users' experiences. No? Ok, well I said sorry.
I'm pretty sure I set contacts to backup to the cloud. I ran the restore, which did not resolve my lack of contacts list... Also went to settings on the iPhone and turned off contacts for cloud, which gave a prompt that contacts would be stored on the phone instead; still no resolution. Apart from suggesting I posted in an inappropriate forum, anyone have any tips I could try? Anyone else have this problem?
It's not a big deal, it can be moved. I just asked for your reason. Also, better watch your attitude... might end up in the RR. All I asked is for a simple reason, no need for that end sentence...
Check https://www.icloud.com/ Login into the same Apple account you have set up on your Phone. Click Contacts and see if it's saved there. If not, looks like Apple has some serious bugs.
Seems like a quite a few people are on edge tonight. I believe this is a good solution:

Hey, $10 extra in my pocket sounds good :D
Anyway, let's not get too off-topic.
I'm not trying to be jerky, I meant to ask if anyone else lost contacts when upgrading... No ill will to you or anyone else, Shadow. Hug?
Checked out contacts icloud.com, no dice. Either I messed up and couldn't tell I told Apple to delete all my contacts when I upgraded, or Denmark has that "fish" smell...
Hmm, well, I doubt it was you that deleted them. Probably some sort of bug (a bug that should be sorted before going live). Kinda dumb to launch a big update of their iOS and have that big of a bug. Looks like you're not the only one with it, from googling, others too. I find it weird that a Restore from Backup doesn't work either. Maybe instead of trying your latest backup, try an earlier backup?
Edit 2: Try this first; if you're using a company with a SIM Card (not Verizon), Open Settings, go to Mail/Contacts/Calender and then choose Import SIM Contacts.
Maybe saved on the SIM.
Maybe your phone didnt like your sarcasm and decided your friends didnt need it either....?? none the less..

Solution #1 – The Text Message Fix
This seems to be the most popular solution if you can see your contacts in your text messaging:
You should have your contacts back. Please delete the “edit the contact in some way” if you don’t want it.
- Open a recent Text Message
- Tap the top of the screen (scrolls to the top of the message)
- Tap “Contact”
- Edit the contact in some way (add an email, new fake phone number or something, you can delete later
- Hit the “Back” button
Solution #2 – The iCloud Fix
This is probably related to problems with iCloud:
Again, this probably triggers a “re-sync” with iCloud to force contacts back
- Go to “Settings”
- Click on “iCloud” (it’s in the app section if you scroll down)
- Turn off your settings
- Turn them back on
Solution #3 – The Import from SIM Fix
This fix relies on you storing contacts in your SIM card most likely:
I wouldn’t rely on this as it may vary based on carrier.
- Go to “Settings”
- Click on “Mail, Contacts, Calendars”
- Click “Import SIM Contacts”
Solution #4 – Reset Your iPhone (Thanks Josh — see comments)
This fix was submitted by a commenter, and it worked for him (basically the same as everything … reset and force a sync):
Hope it works!
- Make sure you are connected to iTunes and online
- Turn off your iPhone
- Turn it on again
- iPhone should sync automatically (this could take time, don’t interrupt it!)
Solution #5 – Restore Your iPhone
This fix submitted by Chris (thanks!) in the comments, and seems to work for a few people:
- Plug iPhone into Computer
- Launch iTunes
- After it’s done syncing, right click on iPhone (under devices in the left) and click on “Restore from Backup”
- Choose one (it may not be the most recent, some folks have bad backups just before the upgrade)
- Let the iPhone restore completely
- DO NOT CONNECT TO iCLOUD
