    Maybe because you were signed in on your computer (on itunes)? this happened to me when i restored a friends ipod. i just signed out before i gave it to him

    Another safe way is, you restore the device for your friend, but as soon as iTunes says "Device has been restored, wait for it to reboot", disconnect it. The iPhone should display a screen asking you to connect to iTunes; give it to your friend in that state, and have him connect it to his/her iTunes in his/her computer.
