Hi Guys and Gals, had my wii about 18 months and now its out of warranty have decided to softmod it, I'll be doing a lot of reading here before doing anything though, pretty scared that I'll brick it.
Haven't modded anything since the PS2 when I used Swap Magic, and the PS1 when I had a cartridge that plugged in the back.....LOL.

Well, found out I'd updated to 4.2 about 2 weeks ago and thought 'bummer', read Messie's guide and reread, downloaded all the files needed, followed the guide and voila, backups are now being played. Much respect and thanks to all here.
Just one thing, I couldn't back up the NAND as the Power,Reset and Eject buttons wouldn't move the cursor. Was I doing something wrong or do I need a Gamecube controller?

Yes, when bootmii can install as boot2, then the console buttons work. If bootmii can only be installed as IOS, a GameCube controller is needed to navigate the bootmii menu.

The 4.2 update actually removes boot2, you might want to verify it loads when you start your Wii. Insert SD card with the bootmii files in place to be sure. You may need to rely on it at some point in the future. If you softmodded since updating to 4.2 then you might have it in place.
