New owner ready to join the Wii hacking community

    Hi,

I bought our family's first Wii off CraigsList last evening for US $70. It works great; our kids are beside themselves with joy! Our Wii's software version is v. 4.1U. I plan on installing Dogeggs or Cile's softmod before connecting our Wii to the internet. I've read about various commercial softmods such as Wii Unlocker Ultra, Wii Unlock Plus, Homebrew Installer, BreWii, and others. I'm not sure which softmod is best for our Wii (so much reading to do), but I guess there's not much added value from the commercial mods over Dogeggs or Clie's mods.

I have some doubts about the wisdom of updating software from 4.1 to v. 4.3 -- which, I read, eliminates the Wii's region-free capability. I haven't yet determined what v. 4.3 does that's positive from the Wii owner's perspective.

Obviously, I have lots of Wii learning to do. I'm sure WiiHacks FAQ and Forums will be a great resource as I learn. Thanks for everyone's patience here with a new Wii owner.

    WWM

P.S., I read about other mods such as Bathaxx, Indiana_Pwns, Return of the Jodi, SSBB, Yu-Gi-Vah and others. I ordered Lego Batman (Bathaxx exploit) yesterday before finding this site.

I read about various bootloaders such as Wiiflow, USB Configurable Loader, Triforce, GeckoOS. I'm not sure of pros/cons of each, nor how easily one can be substituted for another without bricking a Wii.

Is it any wonder new Wii owners feel completely overwhelmed with modding choices?

Welcome and great deal on that Wii for the "kids". It is indeed confusing; I spent almost 6 months reading material from various sites before I did my softmod! First, do not accept an update to your 4.1U Wii. Your Wii is in a sweet spot. Periodically, Nintendo issues a system update that offers no value to users and is intended to attack homebrew and soft/hard modding...4.2 and 4.3 are just that and provide no added value to your 4.1 Wii.

Next, DO NOT BUY a Softmodding package; all the applications and software used in softmodding your Wii have been created and provided by their programmers to the public without charge. Just follow a guide on this site-by the way you can softmod a 4.1 Wii without those game exploits - another reason to stay away from 4.3.

Happy reading and welcome to WiiHacks.

Thank you, Gen3SF. You confirmed my thoughts. I'll read up on Dogeggs or Cile's softmods, then make a decision after our 2 GB Sandisk SD card arrives.

Apologies to Forums Staff for my inadvertent first post rules violation -- please consider it a newbie error.

My kids have been working 2.5 years to "earn" their Wii. They had to know their multiplication tables backward and forward and maintain top school grades. They paid for it with their own chores money. They had fun submitting eBay bids on pink and black colored remotes/nunchucks last evening, which they won at a happy price. They promise to share the Wii peacefully and fairly. (That last promise remains to be seen, though!) In other words, the Wii has become a unifying principle in the lives of a couple of fortunate 9 and 10 year olds... and, indirectly, for their parents who have a new tool for behavior modification.

We're very much looking forward to being part of this Community. Thanks again for your very helpful tips.
