My name is Dave and I am from the United States, Midwest Region.
I just bought our families first Wii last week and I am very interested in soft modding it. I had every intention of hard modding it, but was hit with disappointment when I discovered that was not possible. We purchased a black Wii and after some research I discovered that all black Wii's have been shipped with the new chip and it simply cannot be hard modded.
I figure no big deal. From what I have been reading on this site it sounds like soft modding is a better way to go. I ordered a new USB hard disk, from the compatibilty list, and when that comes in I'll start the soft modding.
