As a general rule of thumb, updates only affect homebrew. This may not always be the case, but it is right now. So, yes, it's safe to update.

Hello and welcome to our community, and yes as Zero said updates at the moment only will affect homebrew.

Many thanks guys, I was a bit disturbed when reading the wiiconnect24 T&C`s, stating they will automatically download and update the unit, do you get the choice of yes or no to the update, as I dont know what homebrew is and what it is for?
However, if it does start to effect others apart from homebrew, then surly this will render the unit useless & how important is updating the firmware, what does this updating do or fix ?, as I said I am new to this and would really like to know the do`s & dont`s, as I dont want to wreck my kids console !! Thanks again guys, I look forward to your help & replies. Cheers

Firmware just changes little things all around, but lately it has just been an excuse for Nintendo to try and kill Homebrew. If you have Homebrew it won't make your Wii useless, you will just have to do some extra stuff to get it running again. If you aren't installing a modchip, or the Homebrew channel then you shouldn't be scared to update.

Well if you have the chip then there is no need to update it. The update will not hurt it if you do, but it is ok. Maybe a little thanks? lol
