Question A question for my first post. (Mod with Menu v2.2U)

Hello everyone. First let me thank anyone who takes the time to give me advice. I have spent several days searching this site and others looking for information that will help me mod my Wii. I have learned a lot but still have not got it working. I want to be able to back up games I have to a USB hard drive and boot them from there so I don't have to swap discs and possibly scratch them.

I recently bought a Wii from a friend of mine (one of the first ones that hit the market). She used it once and then it sat (she was an X360 fan). It has menu 2.2u on it. I have read tutorials for 3.x and 4.x I tried using Bootmii (v1 from the link) on a FAT32 formatted SD card to load Homebrew. In all fairness the tutorial said it was for 3.x versions but I figured it was worth a shot. Trying to load the SD card gave me a blank screen crash. The system rebooted normally with no issues.

I fear if I update my system then I will get the 4.2 patch and that seems to be a problem if I don't have Homebrew installed already. I also ran across some info that suggested that if I had a system prior to 3.2 that there may be an advantage with fakesign or something like that...

I have looked all over and it seems like I may have to upgrade my firmware to get to the point that I can do the twilight hack or any of the other "tricks" to get homebrew on my system. I am not sure how I can upgrade the firmware to a more recent version without going all the way to 4.2

So I decided to buy a sunkey lite (which has not arrived yet) and was wondering if this was the best way to go. I like the idea of doing a solderless mod and I am under the impression the Sunkey lite will avoid me having to manually do a firmware update. I like the idea of being able to pull the sunkey and have a stock Wii later.

So I am posting here to hopefully avoid getting flamed up but I really have had no luck finding info on what to do if you have menu system 2.2U and figured I might get some good advice here.

Like I said, thanks for any advice you may have for me.

Hello and welcome to the wiihacks community.

You have joined the world’s largest Wii modding and forum community. To help you access the useful and relevant information available on this site, it is strongly recommended that you first look at this special site index: Wiihacks Ultimate Index.

Make sure you read the rules of this site. There are a number of tutorials and guides available to assist you. Many of our new members find the tutorials for softmodding any 3.1-4.1 Wii and any 4.2 Wii particularly useful. Make sure to either look through the site tutorials and guides or use the search function before asking questions. While the moderators, staff, and members of this community are willing to help you, some effort on your part to read, research, and follow the rules is expected. To get the best response to your question(s), post in the associated forum areas. This is very important as inappropriate posting could get you restricted to the reading room or even banned. If, after looking at the tutorials and trying to search, you still need help or just want to post a very basic type of question, go to the http://www.wiihacks.com/wiihacks-newbie-corner/.

Wiihacks also has a chat room on irc://irc.uicn.net/wiihacks . After reading the iRC rules, please feel free to join in the light-hearted chats and activities. While any IRC client can connect to #wiihacks on the UICN , there are tutorials to help you connect using either ChatZilla or mIRC.

If this site and our members have provided substantive help, you can Donate to the forum and get a nice banner under your name and gain access to the donator forums.

If you still want to pursue a softmod for your Wii, it is possible to do so. The pre-3.0 Wiis have too many IOSes missing to allow for the standard 3.1-4.1 softmod process to work right away. The best course of action is to allow a game disc to update the Wii. Most game discs will update the system to either 3.1 or 3.4. Following a successful game disc update, you can now follow the 3.1-4.1 tutorial. With regard to your question on updating to 4.1 and avoiding 4.2, that is accomplished in the softmod tutorial by keeping WiiConnect24 OFF during the softmod, but especially critical during the update to 4.1 via the Internet (Step 4 in the tutorial). Enjoy your stay with us.

You could always update with a 3.1 update disc and softmod from there. You can see which games are 3.1 by looking at this thread. http://www.wiihacks.com/recommended-...s-use-run.html

If you want you can get to 4.1 using New Super Mario Bros Wii and go from there which would be even better.
Not really doing much Wii stuff these days.

After you successfully softmod your Wii following this tutorial: http://www.wiihacks.com/recommended-...d-any-wii.html, you can use this guide for your USB HDD: http://www.wiihacks.com/recommended-...s-usb-hdd.html.

Well I installed the recent version of Homebrew using BootMii. Installed fine. THANKFULLY I made a backup of my NAND. I installed the IOS changes ast the tutorial above instructed me to and my homebrew screen was mirrored and upside down. Homebrew site says that is due to a bad IOS. So BootMii and a NAND restore later I can see homebrew again... lol. I am sure I must have done something wrong to get those results since it seems it works for most people.

What I am wondering is will USB loader GX not work properly with my current IOS and 3.4U (that is the impression I am getting)? And if I install the Sunkey Lite when it arrives will that eliminate my need to do these IOS changes? I paid for the chip already ($25) and it will be here sooner or later... I really just want to back up games I have to a HD so I can launch them from there and put away the origional disks.

Thanks for the help. Much apreciated.

I was wondering about that chip as you mentioned a HDD. A chipmod is for those who want to play game backup disc through the disc channel. The chip does not allow anything else. You will still need a softmod if you want to load and play your game backups from an external USB HDD.

The flipped HBC is the result of a prank by the hackmii project team to show their disapproval of piracy. All one needs to do in most cases is to reinstall HBC and it will flip back.

USB Loaders require the installation of the cIOS that is installed in Step 3. You need to re-do Step 3 because of your NAND restore. If HBC flips on successful installation of the Trucha Bug-complete Step 3 and then just reinstall HBC.

So I can see I was mistaken about the purpose of the Sunkey Lite. I am getting the impression now that it just allows the DVD drive to read DVD -R disks in addition to factory origionals. Where the soft mods we are doing are to change the IOS to cIOS to allow us to run the USB loaders properly. Two seperate issues entirely? I thought the chip took care of the IOS issue too... but I guess not.

So... I repeated step 3. got the bug taken care of and updated the IOS everything went great. I reinstalled Homebrew after the cIOS update and it flipped back upright. The only issue I ran across was that when I went to update from 3.4U to the safe 4.1U it ran everything fine with the exception of the last (4.1U) update. That one got an error.... I figured I am ok since I am using USB LoaderGX and not PriiLoader (it sounds like priiloader will not work with 3.3/3.4?) ...

So I decided to test out the setup... Since I did not have a USB HDD ready to be wiped I would test it with an HP USB Flash drive I had. USB Loader loaded fine.. It installed Metroid: Trilogy (the game that gave me the 3.4U update) to the flash drive. I downloaded the 3d artwork for the game and it looked awsome... I wet to launch a couple of the games on the disk and got a black screen crash. I have read that Wii are real picky about which HDD will work with it so I am assuming that the problem I have is with the drive and not the softmod... am I correct? I am guessing that since USB LoaderGX is loading and running fine that the softmod went well and I just need to get a proper drive to finish the project. Is this all true or are things buggered up because I did not get the 4.1U update to finish properly?

Thanks again you have been a great help... You have really cleared up a lot of confusion for me...

    Cheers!

From another post I am thinking this might be a game that suffers from other issues that I will need to work around... I will search further.... and maybe try backing up a different game.. perhaps Resident Evil 4.. and see how that runs...

Thanks again for all the help..
