i would put gecko os on it and the any region changer if you don't have system menu 3.2 on your wii yet.

If you have the Homebrew Channel already, you might want to consider the 3.2 downgrade. There's a link in my signature with specific instructions on how to get it done. The link also contains everything you need for your SD card, in a proper format. If you are at the 3.2 already, use the link to get the applications.

I think 2 apps that are "must haves" is "Wad Manager" and "StarFall". Wad Manager will install all types of things including Virtual Console and WiiWare titles. StarFall will configure your system to block software updates.

I'm a bit on the paranoid side. Even though my WiiKey 2 blocks updates, I have StarFall doing it too. This is done to bulletproof the system. I'm not saying it's the right thing, it's just what I do for peace-of-mind.

StarFall even has system recovery functionality. You can undo a brick if this is previously installed.

Undetectable. You can take those online with 0 issues.

Caution on the VC stuff though. People take roms and "inject" it into a VC file structure. If this is done wrong, you can brick your console.

Make sure to read feedback on what you're going to install.

Oh, also check out Gecko OS.

I'd stay away from the Virtual Console, with the exception of N64 VC games. You can use emulators on your wii.
