Yes , it enables the Wii to function as a decent media tank.

Since when does it let you play media from PC via LAN? I know it support SMB, HTTP, and FTP but setting up a LAN connection to your PC is news to me.

By using the basic definition of a LAN (the ability to utilize resources of other computers on a network) you can use either the built in WiFi or add the Wii LAN Adapter, thus allowing you to "play media from a PC".

Doh. I was assuming they meant hooking into their PC via a LAN cable and adapter. I wasn't thinking about the broader definition.

In addition, if you should choose to go the WiiMC route for a Media Player.... VLC Shares is a nice addition that adds even more functionality to the WiiMC application.

Utilizing a second NIC on the PC side (with the Wii LAN Adapter for wired or a WiFi NIC) you can use Windows ICS. This would essentially be a direct connection from the Wii to a PC. But for the most part, this is a rather archaic method. Routers are a dime a dozen these days.
