The whole DVD+R thing was pretty much intended to steal away manufacturers and users of DVD-R equipment, so while it's not that "it wasn't made for it", it's more like "it was made to work on stuff that was not made for it so we could steal the competition" (evil strategy).

Certainly makes it easier, but part of the reason for mixed success is heavily dependent on type of burner, type of media, and burn speed. A lot of people using XBox360 burn with Pioneers and insist always use dual layer DVD+R Verbatim. They go with what works, but that's not to say that's the *only* way it works. While it's good that everyone uses the same and gets the same result, it also kinda sucks in the sense that people who have existing hardware won't get any help since people will tend to say "just get what everyone else has" and you never see or hear about what happened after that.

Admittedly, a Pioneer DVR-216 doesn't cost a whole lot these days (30-40$ OEM). I remember when we used to pay 400-500$ for CD and DVD burners and when everyone used to use SCSI for them (tack on another 200$ for the controller).... I had a crazy friend who bought one of the early Pioneer 2x CD burners and he got it *used* about 900$ during the time (and 2x CD media cost like 20$/ea) . Now we have BD-R drives and media which go for half that... (heh, how time and technology advance...)

Which are pretty much designed from all the advances we've been having in existing PC hardware. Most of these drives are all controlled by a handful number of chips these days, so it's easier for them to go and buy a chip and throw it in rather than try to mass-produce their own chip or make it from scratch. OR, if the design doesn't suit them, they can license the design (intellectual property) and they modify it as they see fit. So if the drive already had that feature, they probably won't go out of their way to remove it unless they needed to. They probably could if they wanted to, but less likely since it's more like a firmware thing rather than a controller thing and it's one of those potential forward-thinking sorts of things.

Close is relative, since it depends on what's stopping it from reading it. For older set-top DVD players, booktyped DVD+R to DVD-ROM is more compatible than DVD-R, but only because they tended to not recognize and refuse disks which had a DVD-R or DVD+R signature, but if you booktyped the DVD+R disks it would recognize it as DVD-ROM and it would work.

People used to speculate it was the reflectivity of the disks since DVD-ROMs read a lot more easily than DVD recordables and DVD rewritables. But in reality, all drives have automatic gain control to boost the signal and improve reliability, so it's more or less a non-issue unless it's really really crap media and causes a lot of DREs (AGC can only do so much, esp. if the medium isn't well-written to begin with).

Anyway, to get back to what you're saying, DVD-R would be easier for earlier first-generation computer drives to read, and it might very well be that they work off that design, but I'm just saying that there's a possibility it could work better with DVD+R under the right conditions (ie: properly burnt and booktyped).
