    Soft-modding questions

    Hi everyone
One of my friends wants me to soft-mod his wii so he can play backup games. I know how to install homebrew channel from here:

How to Install the Wii Homebrew Channel

& I know how to make it play backups here:

Run Backups on any Wii Without a Modchip

However, my last wii was bricked with error 003 so I want to take precautions when doing this so his wii won't get bricked & I'll get the blame. I need to know how to install the trucha patch to load homebrew discs in case of bannerbrick, & starfall in case of error 003 or full brick, to run Indiana Pwns. I've read starfall permanently affects the wiis NAND memory, will this make it difficult to return it to a virgin wii if my friend has second thoughts? help please!

Thanks for your advice so far, but I still have questions. As I understand, my friend has already established an internet connection & has been playing Mario Kart Online for a while now. If I soft-mod it, can he still play online? Also do I have to install bootmii to copy the NAND? What is bootmii? What is NAND? I've already planned to install trucha patch if he gets a brick. Does copying the NAND save you from an error 003?

Sorry I'm not going to divulge that information, especially on a hacker site. I know how to softmod a wii from various tutorials, but the question still remains:
I've read starfall permanently affects the wiis NAND memory, will this make it difficult to return it to a virgin wii if my friend has second thoughts?

If you read and follow one of the guides that Cile posted you should have no problem softmodding you friends wii. AND I really reccomend those over any other out there. It is possible to virginize afterwards but I don't know why your friend would want a virgin wii after having a modded wii.

Bootmii is a brick protection/recovery program please do install if you can install as boot2 then you 98% safe from bricks. Starfall, Starpatch and preloader are also brick protections and also have some useful menu hacks like block nintendo updates so you don't accidentlly brick your wii, recomend that too. The nand is your wii memory I contains all you system menu files and yes you should back it up. I back up mine everytime I make major changes.

Ohh and yes you can still connect to the internet, I play mariokart and the conduit online all the time.

The Rescue Menu is a built-in menu by Nintendo, it doesn't make your Wii unbrickable. If you install another System Menu, all hacks will be removed.
From the wiibrew starfall page it's as easy as installing another system menu.

Well the reason he wants to softmod it is because his parents won't let him get anymore wii games, so he wants to get backups. If his prents found out, or if he just found it all too complicated I can make it a virgin. As I understand starfall only works on 3.2E or U, only autoboots legitimate games & I think he has played NSMB which would make it 4.2E. Any other subsitutes for starfall? Also I'm using a guide written by Dogeggs:

As you will see by reading Dogeggs' tutorial, priiloader is used for brick protection. Priiloader has hacks to block both game disc updates and online system updates.

NSMB game disc update is 4.1

Find out what he has as a system menu by going into wii settings, its written in the top of the screen. Then use the guide which matches the wii.
