Hey,
I have been using my SD card to watch movies etc. with Mplayer up to now. I have a USB drive now that I want to use.
It mounts ok, and plays the video, but it buffers constantly.
Any thoughts on what may be the cause? Would the USB 2.0 patch be worth installing?

It is worth a try, that is its main function. Here is the link. How big are these files you are trying to play?
The files are 600MB to 1GB .vob files I'll try different format files, and report back.
Does this CIOS instaler work without an internet connection?

And the is 600-1g for 1 movie? ?why vob, xvid may be better if you have the time.
I watch avis usually, the .vobs are music videos (sound is better)

a 1g music video sounds overboard for the wii. The wii only has so much memory to buffer with. If you bitrate is to high, mplayer will try to buffer forever until it reaches it desired %, but if that is greater than the available memory = Fail. The cios may help, not sure. I would expect 2 hours of video for 1g, especially since the wii is only 480i.
You could re-encode those into xvid and maintain sound quality if you really wanted to take the time. Just check out doom9.net and Gordian Knot, available there- everything you need. Except the time.

Interesting, I had a similar problem but mine was over the network. As for USB, I have a bunch of my kid's movies ripped in raw DVD format, 4.3GB roughly, and I play the VOB files with no problems. In my mplayer.conf setting I upped the cache to about 38k and left the other field at 30% and it runs great from USB. I also install the USB 2.0 patch.

What would be the maximum cache size possible, does it have any adverse affect making it bigger and would changing the min and max caching percentages have any affect also ?
I'm not really sure what the max cache size is. I just kept adding 10k to mine until it stopped responding. By default it was set to 8000 roughly. So I went, 18000, then 28000 and so on. I found that if I set my cache to 48000 that mplayerce would not launch and I would get errors. Maybe that's just me though.
