Recommended: Play DVDs on your Wii with Mplayer CE and DVDX

Using your Wii as a DVD/media player is dead easy, all you need is DVDX and Mplayer CE. DVDX is a cIOS that allows your Wii to read DVDs and Mplayer CE uses this for DVD playback.

MPlayer CE also reads from SD/USB so you can plug your USB stick/HDD in and watch all your XViD movies with it.
MPLayer CE also supports streaming of video over wifi using SMB shares.
There is also a special USB2 cIOS that when installed is detected by MPlayer and used to give USB2 speeds to your Wii, this is optional though and only recommended if you have playback problems.

DVDX Installer - copy to apps directory on your SD card and run via HBC

MPlayer CE 0.75 - copy to apps directory and run via HBC or the forwarder channel.

MPlayer CE Forwarder channel - (Preview) Install with wad manager, links to .dol on sd card so don't rename folder.

MPlayer CE cIOS Installer - copy to apps directory and run via HBC, network connection required.

MPlayer - AgentX Mod Channel - My favorite player, install with wad manager, no need for .dol on SD. This one has never let me down, plays xvid from my usb stick flawlessly ;)

This post will be kept up to date with the latest versions of all the apps and info.

nice sticky. Question though. I have read other places that playing dvd movies on the wii is not a good thing though because the lens is constantly reading the dvd unlike when wii games are only really read when loading. Just want your opinion on this.

There is a lot of talk about the Wii and it's DVD drive breaking when it's overused.

Video, when streamed off the disc comes off in a nice spiral line wth minimal lens seeking. The lens won't get very tired doing this and as it never contacts the disc and shouldn't get worn out.

When we load games off our backup discs the lens carrier mechanism can often be heard banging about inside the drive as it searches for the data, the mechanism will only tolerate this for a certain time before it loses calibration and becomes more erratic. This is probably why DVD-R is recommended, it makes it easier for the lens to see and needs less motor involvement.

I could be wrong of course.

If unsure use USB and that way the drive isn't spinning.

If the Drive is like any other console than it wont hurt it. I have been using PS2/XBOX/XBOX360 to play dvd for years, not to mention drives in PC's.

Since you brought it up Tealc99, got alittle question then. When I have a disc in the drive and restart the wii using an option (not manually resetting it) is the drive supposed to make a single click when the system restarts? It only does it when a disc is in the drive.

Hi in Mplayerce I get ask to but a boot file in apps/mplayer_ce I've place the file which I used in wad and rename to boot.dol is this correct or do I need to add another boot file. As currenlty I keep getting boot erorrs when try to run the app.

I agree with you on that I sometimes hear that quite a lot with my Wii, but I really want to try and get a usb drive so I can save my wii lens from screwing up completely as it has properly failed to read one of my backup games ones which was a DVD-R but there is a reason to it as well, the media I burned the game onto is absolutely crap but thats beside the point, It's mostly true what you are saying, but there isn't a lot of talk about the lens breaking there is an INSANE amount of talking about the lens breaking. No worries about your console being sent of to Nintendo though if it breaks, you can probably really easily get new Wii parts off the web. And nice mplayer I tried it out and it worked great for the DVD's I tried (Die Hard 1, 2 and Casino Royale)

Also we run the games at HALF speed meaning the console requires the disc to spin more to get to the data, so even though it is a DVD drive, the disc may damage the system because of the more spining required. Highly unlikely though mostly because, it's a dvd Drive and the fact that DVD drives play any standard DVD very well anyways, it's just Nintendo have to make sure there ahead of the times by making their Discs special and also be read faster and quieter than backup copies.

Stewieb. I dont quite understand you because your post is alittle weird. but Ill try and answer it. You can get a channel that has the boot.dol injected into the wad itself. That ofcource will make the file bigger (wii blocks). You can also get a wad and inject a dol forwarder into it, which will make the file smaller because the actually application is not inside the wad. If your dol forwarder directs you to mplayer_ce, then you need to have your mplayer boot.dol file in the apps/mplayer_ce folder. It has to be the exact same as the path or else it wont work. Sorry if I've not made it clear, but let me start again

I load wad then install Mplayer CE forward using wad, I then get the nice new channel on my wii, when I click on start in the channel MPlayer CE I receive the following message no boot.dol in apps/Mplayer_ce

Now my question is, were do I get the boot file from if I create apps/mplayer-ce or should this boot file already be their.

download 'MPlayer CE 0.7' and unpack it to the apps folder on your sd card....
