If you want to mod your system, we do have a guide that we recommend. A link to it is in my signature: Softmod Any Wii guide.

If it truly is a virgin system, I would (note, others wouldn't) use Nintendo update to update it to 4.3 first, then mod with letterbomb.

If you don't want to do that, you can use the bannerbomb v1 in the guide to start the process, but since the menu is below 3.2, you'll have to use MMM instead of Wii Mod to install the wad files (another reason why I suggest updating to 4.3 first).

If it is already modded, then you don't want to do Nintendo's updates.
    Hi Llaffer

    Thanks for your guidance.

I have previously done a full softmod to a different wii; a version 4.2. That went 100% successfully from start to finish. I used the standard 'softmod any wii' guide on wiihacks.com to do that wii.

However, when I try to softmod the 3.1e wii, I cannot even get boot.dol to load (via the standard 'channels' - 'sd card' method).

This is why I am trying the wiibrand method (as recommended by cjizzle).

However, now I find the wiibrand method is freezing at the initial dialogue box and not asking me to 'press 1 to continue'.

So, I am open to any suggestions.

Do you recommend that step 1, I should update the wii to the official nintendo update (4.3) before I proceed?

    Thank you for your guidance

So I should try the official Nintendo update for starters then?

Are there drawbacks to this approach?

    Thanks

Ahh. I didn't realize the back-story. Well, I tried out wilbrand once just to see what did for me, and it ended up generating a letterbomb-like exploit, but placed the bomb in Aug 8, 2001 instead of "today" or "yesterday". So I had to spend 5 min just backtracking a month at a time to get to it, only to find out that they didn't include the boot.dol to launch the installer, so it just threw me into the menu again.

Installing it from my letterbomb backup, I tried it again, and just hung on me. So I've not actually seen this program work. I know others have said they have had success.

As for updating with nintendo, if you've modded your system in the past, there's a chance it could brick, depenging on the mod that was done and what the update does, so we usually call that a last-chance event. But you've tried other things, and may be close to it. but I'm not suggesting you try it yet. Maybe someone else will have other ideas.

And one more thing, try to avoid double-posting. I'll merge your two posts together, but in the future, you should be able to edit your last post to add info instead of replying to yourself. If it's been over 24 hours between posts, then it's ok. Thanks.

EDIT: OK. never mind on that last paragraph. I see that your first post was moderated, so you couldn't have seen it to edit it. So you can disregard that section.

    Thanks Llaffer.

Yes, it has been going on a little while alright with a few things tried. However, I am willing to stay trying 'safe' things until it is sorted because I am in no rush to have it modded.

As far as I know, this 3.1e wii has not been softmodded. Is there any way I can find out?

There is no sign of the homebrew channel etc. But if there is a more specific check I would prefer to carry it out, just in case I do end up needing to do a Nintendo update in order to get it softmodded.

Yes, I am having a little bit of trouble with some posts in the forum not appearing. I am probably doing it wrong

    Thanks again

    "7 Sins" conditions:
    - Wii "date & time" be set up-to-date
    - Wii must be Internet connected successfully
    - Wii sys_Menu be at version 4.3
    - Wii MAC must be correct
    - Wii region must be correctly addressed for downloading the "Bomb"
    - the Bomb be placed to SD card root
    - in order to find the Bomb, check the mail within 3 days on Wii calendar

I just tried the same thing and got the same error. Looks like that it is trying to piece together the files needed for you to perform the mod by downloading files from the Internet in real time. One of the files is supposed to come from someone's dropbox account. Either permissions are set so the file is no longer available or has been deleted. There isn't anything that we can do about this as the software isn't ours.

I would look into using letterbomb via http://please.hackmii.com and then complete the mod using Softmod Any Wii guide (linked in my signature).

Because Macs SUCK for softmodding. Trust me on this, so much fail with the Mac format utility for SD cards is a common theme as another example.
