I dunno, you're Australian. Never know WHAT you are going to do.
Never the less: about the topic.
I've had some experience (30+) with both softmod and chips (WIIKEY2 and nowadays Drivekey)
Softmod does take much more time to install compared to the chips. For my own wii I installed both and especially since the usb-loader I'm glad I did. No more messing around with the discs :-)
Most people I know are not interested in HB at all, so why bother for the softmod?
Even the official Nintendo 4.0 firmware did nothing funny to my wii, everything is still working fine, including HB and the rest. Yes, I can hear you think: official update?
Well, I don't mind to experience a bit. So yes, the minute it was available I updated (I wanted the SDHC-capability among with the channels on SD-card) and I've no regrets yet.
Back to the topic: do your research and you'll be fine. On the other hand: spent 40 bugs (euros of dollars) and you've got a Drivekey (or something else) and don't have to worry about anything.

Yeah, homebrew's working if you updated through WiFi. Try that there gamma loader.
Can someone elaborate on this a little please. If I install this with wad manager will all of my games still work? Will this allow the new SDHC ability? Thanks
IF ALL YOU WANT TO DO IS TO PLAY BACKUPS OF YOUR ORIGINALS...AND DON'T WANT all THE HASSLES...,HAVING TO LEARN, & ALL THE CONTINUAL NEEDED UPDATES...CHANCES OF BRICKING.
BEST IS TO GET A SOLDERLESS MODCHIP FROM ANY REPUTABLE SOURCE....LIKE 1 OF OUR SPONSORS.
2 MINUTE INSTALL AND YOU'RE PLAYING... NO MAINTENANCE...NO WORRIES...NO BRICKING...NO EXPENSIVE NINTENDO REPAIRS...NO CONTINUAL UPDATES.
I read this and realized this exactly where I fit in. Right now, I'm using a "softmod" until my Drivekey arrives from Canada but this is great advice. All I want to do is be able to "Dump" my iso to my computer so I can "Burn" the backup.
