I just bought a black Wii. It has homebrew 1.0.8 on it. And the wii homescreen version is 4.3U I connected to the internet and it wants to update the wii. I was wondering one, if I should. And two, if I do will it brick the wii or mess it up because of the home brew? Thanks in advance for any help on this!
The general, common knowledge rule, is to never run official updates.
It shouldn't brick you. It probably will not delete HBC either, but there is no reason to roll the dice. If you want to keep HBC and have a fully functional softmod you should follow the softmod any wii guide linked in my signature. That guide will get you the most up to date softmod you can have and it will install Priiloader to block those pesky updates.

ok quick question. To implement this guide and start from scratch is it a matter of just formatting my SD card? Or is their something else I need to do to delete the previous HBC etc
The only stupid question is one that is not asked. The guide is updated for any version, hence the the name of the quide.

I was wondering if this wii can play backup copies of my wii games on disk, or external HD with just a software mod? Or do I need something like WODE and if I get WODE is HBC still necessary and or compatible with WODE? Or does having WODE defeat the purpose of needing a software mod/HBC
