If the wii is new, I would call the store and raise hell. Try to get them to just swap out the controller.

That's a good idea, and it can't be unethical since I can't see how this has anything to do with softmodding the Wii. I bought it from Costco, and they're great about returns; the problem is that I can see them insisting on returning the entire system, which I obviously cannot do. Hmmm.

BTW - an idea that popped into my head is that the official Wii website says to do this:
Turn the power of the Wii console ON. When you see the Health and Safety screen, open the small flap on the front of the Wii console to find a red button labeled "SYNC."
Does it make a difference that the console sync button be pressed during the Health and Safety screen? 'cuz I no longer get a Health and Safety screen (I changed that setting in Priiloader). Of course, I loaded Priiloader to get the H&S screen back, but of course Priiloader requires a working wiimote to navigate, so I couldn't.

Costco will probably try to make you bring in the whole thing. You could try though. I would tell them that you don't want to do that because you will lose all of your save game data. Whatever you have to say to convince them to just swap out the controller. If they won't then you have to go in and buy another one and then return the bad one in it's place. Ethics are questionable in that scenario, but that's what they get for not being cooperative in the first place .
I don't think you have to be on the health screen for that to work, but maybe.

Well whaddaya know! I tried to resync for about the 12th time... and for reasons unknown to me, it worked.

The only thing I did differently was to unplug EVERYthing... let it sit like that for several minutes... then powered everything up, tried the 20-second sync again, and for some reason that finally did the trick. No idea why it didn't work any of the other times, but I'm happy to have a fully functioning wiimote again (especially since I won't have time to go to Costco until Monday)!!

Thanks again for trying to help with this; it's much appwiiciated!!

I willed it to work, and so it was.
