It's hard to tell what's going on from your description and without actually being able to see the PC. If I had to guess I would say it sounds like your browser has been hijacked to me. You can probably clean it up. Do you have anti-virus and firewall software? Ad-aware is also somewhat useful for hijacks. After you clean it up you should switch to Firefox or better yet a Linux distro and Firefox. I had to slip in at least one Linux fanboy comment. It's so hard to hold them back!

Windows firewall is crap as is Windows. If you have Firefox why are you using IE? I can't guarantee your browser is hijacked like I said, I'm just guessing from your description. You might want to Google the subject to learn a little and then try to clean it up. Having your browser hijacked is pretty low on the list of malicious things that can happen to your PC and usually isn't that hard to clean up.

Being the freak I am I would probably deep scan with your anti-virus, Run M$'s malicious software removal tool, run Ad-aware, and then reboot the PC in safe mode and deep scan again. That should clean you up in an overkill type of fashon. The anti-virus screen is probably just a nag screen telling you how many days you have left and wanting you to buy the product.

Here's what happens in a hijack straight from M$:

Browser hijacking is a type of online fraud. Scammers use malicious software to take control of your computer's Internet browser and change how and what it displays when you're surfing the web.
How do I know if my browser has been hijacked?

    * Home page or other settings change on your computer. Links are added that point to websites that you'd usually avoid.
    * You can't navigate to certain web pages, such as antispyware and other security software sites.
    * A seemingly endless barrage of ads pops up on your screen.
    * New toolbars or Favorites are installed that give you icons and links to web pages that you don't want.
    * Your computer runs sluggishly. Malicious software can slow down your computer.

Here's their suggestions on how to fix it.

Just poking fun, you have enough trouble with windows, don't want to get you involved in Linux, but it is better IMO... barring what darkcide666 says, a nice fresh install without all that HP bloatware garbage would be a great start...

You'll definitely be good to go if you follow Desperado's advice. After you switch your OS to a superior one that is.
