No success with Mario Kart so far, and I have tried a lot of different combinations too.

I couldn't get past the Twlightlight hack, which loads the Homebrew, which is is needed to load Gecko (I think).

What games have you tried that works?
engteach...just to let I know I finally got everything working!! many thanks for the advice about the NTSC-J Zelda. If you are still having problems try checking the thread at:

Thumbs up

Hi menyawga! Thanks for your post.
Following your instructions I successfully installed HBC on my Korean (3.3K) Wii, with Wiikey2 modchip.

I wanted to add two things that may help other users:

1) My Wiikey2 chip didn't allow updates from other region games (it has brickblock protection enabled by default now), and I found no way to reconfigure the modchip (no config disc available for Korean Wiis).
So I couldn't easily install the update from Mario Kart NTSC-U (backup).
I had to use a DVD-reader with D2SUN modchip (borrowed from another wii I own) to install the update.

2) Twilight Princess NTSC-J shows a message (in Japanese) at start-up then hangs... no panic, it's just asking to connect a nutchunk!

- Korean Wii Firmware 3.3k, bought 11/08 off the shelf
- D2E Chipset WITH EPOXY (yes, they're in Korea too now)
- Wiikey 2 with Wii clip

Here's what I did:

I opened the wii and found epoxy. I don't have a heat gun and couldn't find any Nitromors paint remover in Korea so I went to a local hardware store and showed them pictures of the epoxy-covered chip and a pic of Nitromors. They gave me some strong but regular clear mineral spirit-type stuff. It didn't work in the half hour that others are reporting about the Nitromors. Instead I slaved for 6 hours painstakingly using q-tips to "sand down" to the chip itself. then I used an exacto knife to clean away the metal area on the outside of the chip. I cut in an upward motion between the metal things (sorry I don't know the word) and cleared out 99% of the epoxy around the chip. I installed wiikey 2 with clip and it worked no problem. After setting the region free up by first loading an original Korean game, I loaded a backup of Mario Kart NTSC-U and installed the complete update. Then I loaded a backup of Twilight Princess NTSC-J and installed HBC through the Twilight hack. Now I can use Gecko OS to run any game I've come across whether PAL or NTSC-J/U. I don't have much experience with loading WADs yet, but I don't think it'll be a problem with all the great work everybody is doing here. I just wanted to add some more info for those Korean Wii users out there. If anyone has any questions or additional info please post.

For more detailed info about the HBC installing process, see the following link.

Props to Guzzard for having the balls to take a chance on an outside region update, and Link for extra support.

Peace,

Change Korean Region Wii to US

Hey guys, sorry I've been out of the loop for a while.

Here's some details of what I did that I left out before:

Put the wiikey 2 chip in (NO BRICKBLOCK SETTING YET) and set it officially to Korean region by loading an original Korean game. Then I immediately put in a backup of Mario Kart and installed the update. Then I put in a backup of Twilight Princess JPN and ran twilight hack. After successfully installing HBC ver 0.8 I was able to run any ntsc backups through gecko 1.7.

A few weeks later, after much deliberation, I decided to follow the directions posted by a user named Kavid (he's a Chinese guy on a few different forums, just type in "Korea Wii Change USA" on google) to change my region to US 3.2. They included links to the files and slightly altered utilities that were specifically modified for changing Korean wiis to 3.2 U. I followed their instructions EXACTLY, and was able to completely change to NTSC-U, and everything since then has been PERFECT. One word of warning: if you're using Wiikey 2, you have to set it up again by running the update disc. Then after it's been reinstalled for the US Region, make sure you put in a US game to set the correct region again.

I use sony dvd-r (plus a verbatim dvd+r dl for SSBB) for my media.

To play Korean orginal games again after changing regions, I had to install Tona's Patchmii CIOS Installer with Korean Disc Support from wiibrew.org.

As far as I'm concerned, the US region is sooo much freer than the Korean one for most homebrew and backups. If you have questions, please PM me so I'll see it in my email since I don't visit these forums as often anymore.

And of course, use this info at your own risk. I take no responsibility for people bricking their wiis.

Peace,

-Menyawga
