WiiKey2 Questions

Hey all, I'm new to this whole Wii modding scene and there are a couple of questions I was unable to find elsewhere.

The first one is... What is the true difference between softmodding and WiiKey2'ing a Wii? I know there is the obvious difference in that one is a chip and the other is a software change. My guess was that the chip wouldn't be blocked by Nintendo updates (making it safe to do firmware updates as they come out - except for version 4.2 because it's bricking even un-modded Wii's I read) whereas softmodded Wiis need to do "work-arounds" to get games working without doing updates. Is this correct?

And the second one is... There is a preloader for softmodding to prevent bricking the Wii in case something happens... Do we also need this for WiiKey2 installations or is it irrelevant since it's using a modchip?

Thanks in advance.

(Note : The WiiKey2 in question is a soldered one, not one of the "clip" ones.)

Edit : My main reason for asking #1 is that people I speak to who do softmodding/have softmodded systems always trash-talk modchips because "What's the point of paying for something when softmodding does the exact same thing for free?" Most even claim there is absolutely no difference between the two except one has a cost and the other doesn't.

People who say why pay for modchips need to pull their heads out of their a*** for starters as they don't seem to know much if anything based on that statement, now that I've got that out off the way....

1. Making a NAND backup should help save you if you brick your Wii from a bad softmod and if you accidently install an out of region update which your modchip failed to block.

2. Modchips actually help some Homebrew apps launch games that would otherwise fail to boot and they also allow the booting of GC backups along with Wii backups. Basically they compliment each other.

3. If your getting a soldered WiiKey make sure you know how to install it or get a professional to do it for you as a bad soldering job can cause damage to the circuitry.

If I can think of anything else to add I'll either modify this post or make a new one.

Thanks a lot for that information. Doesn't softmodding also allow booting of GC games though?

I actually already have the system (with WiiKey2 installed). The whole softmod vs. hardmod question is coming because we are looking into another system and were unable to find enough information on the argument as to which is better.

My reason for choosing to get the WiiKey2 one was because I felt it was better to not cut corners and to go for what I felt was a superior choice, although a little more expensive.

I plan to try modchipping my own system in the near/not-so-distant future though. Probably PS2... Mostly for learning purposes and so I can get experience for modding my own systems when the next ones are out (PS4/Wii2/Xboxwhatever).

GC booting is possible with a soft mod but it has its limitations as some games won't boot and some have audio errors (streaming audio) and some just crash the program after loading.

i have both on my wii. 4.2 updated made it so you can't play out of region games on chipped wii's. so i softmodded my wii also so i can play out of region games. i kinda like the softmod a little better because of the apps and being able to install vc and ww games without paying for them.my personal opinion is you might as well do both if your chipping your wii so you can backup your nand if something ever bricked you wii.

I went ahead and installed Homebrew Channel and GeckOS... I still have issues with Pal games though because they always show in black and white/in the wrong resolution. I've messed with all the settings in Gecko and the chip to no resolution.

Would it require a converter to get it looking proper or is there something I'm missing? I know for the PS2 there was a game converter that would turn your Pal <--> NTSC games (by that I mean you could play them as Pal with the black/white and resolution issues and the converter would make them load up properly).
