Question about chips and updates

Ok, im dont know too much about chips, but im trying to help a friend out :P

He has a Wii, with a Wiikey (thats as much as he/I knows!:P).

Ive lent him RockBand: Beatles, Wii Music and GH Metallica.

GH wants to update, Beatles loads, then black screens, not sure about wii music ("dont work" is all he said about that!)

Im waiting to find out which firmware he's on!

Am i correct in assuming that he needs (probably) to update to 4.1?
Possibly to update his chips firmware?

Is there anything special about updating with a modchip?

Should i slap him and tell him to softmod it?

I don't think firmware has to be updated very often but if he hasn't done so for a while it might be worth checking the Wiikey site. It covers legacy Wiikey and has isos for download.

Generally it's OK to update chipped Wiis, that's one of the better things about having a hardmod. The discs you lent him should have every update he'll need unless they are update scrubbed (you didn't say retail or backup)

Yes they were backups, all scrubbed (even tho GH asked him to update?!?)

ill get him to update it and see how it goes (not heard back from him as to system menu he has at the minute).

sure i can sort him out with an update

anything to keep him quiet! lol

back again!

it would appear he has 4.1E, so im assuming the usual IOS38, 53, 55 may be missing.

dont think he's had many new games recently, so at least its somewhere to start from

Probably but also maybe 56 and 57, I think those are needed for GH type games but I might be out of date with that because I don't follow those threads.

I also didnt read many of the threads as my GH5 just seemed to work!
