Okay, I confess, my 10-year old is the one who wants the Wii and I haven't goe any idea about what's involved with it - I'm looking for one for a Christmas present (this is so unfair to us poor mothers! ;) ). But, I keep seeing things about componenet cables and I don't know what they are. Do we need them to operate the wii? Or if I get the console will that keep him happy for a while? tia

component cables are not required, however if you have a TV that supports HD (high definition) or ED (enhanced definition) the picture quality will look a lot better... the wii supports resolution up to 720P it will also do 480P.... so check if your TV supports these modes, if not and it is an older TV you can just stick to the regular composite cables it comes with..
Ah, all makes sense. My tv is HD compatible but we haven't gotten the upgrade so looks like I'll be okay. If I every get a wii...
You do not need component cables to use the Wii. As Mike all ready explained, they are just if you want improved graphics.
If you do choose to get them I believe as of now they are only availible online on Nintendo's website.

Can you use composite cables in place of component, they do fit... but im wondering if there is any difference in quality between the actual cables... they seem to look the same...

So are you saying the yellow (video only) composite wire is replaced by three component wires? Component cables only have video and I'll still need to use the Red and White composite cables for audio?Quote:

I understand the difference between component/composite i was asking if you can use the composite cables in the component terminals. It's just wire I realize... i assume it should work fine and allow higher resolution....
