Help needed, software update on a chipped Wii

I bought my 8yr old son a chipped ( not sure which chip is installed...how can i tell?) Wii, bought in asia, recently to play download and genuine/ back up games from any region. Bought a back up game Mario Galaxy, and it wants to install an update before it can be played, as does a couple of other games that i got as well.
As I'm a complete novice here, can someone (in simple speak, i have tried to fingd my answer in these pages!) please answer the following....

1, What will happen to the wii if i continue with the update...will it render the wii useless?

2, can the game be played with doing the updates? such as if i use the udate blocker?

3, the wii is not connected to the internet!

would hate to do anything this close to xmas to spoil it for him if it all goes wrong so your help is greatly appreciated....Thanx.

1 no matter what update it wont render it useless, out of region can disable your settings, but thats it

2 most yes, some no, Mario galaxy is a no, it requires dual layer support, but if its in region its safe

    3 its not needed

You have to head to the dashboard, click the "Wii" in the corner, "settings", and let us know of the firmware version.

    X.X-J = Japan
    X.X-E = Europe
    X.X-U - United States.

What you must absolutely NOT do is update your console with a game from outside of its region. Do NOT take a Japanese Wii and update it with a PAL disc. It'll brick the console.

There are applications to region change the machine. You might want to consider that option.

There are several ways to block an update. The most effective is "StarFall". It's a master configuration utility that will block all disc updates.

In order to run "StarFall" you must first install the "Homebrew Channel". The Homebrew Channel can be installed in several ways pending your console's firmware, since you're already chipped.

    If you're at a 3.2 firmware or less, there's a disc installer.
If you're at a 3.3 firmware or higher, you'll need to downgrade the firmware via "Twilight Hack" utilizing a Zelda disc and an SD card.

And that's a start. If you have to downgrade, you'll need to connect back ... but no biggie.

on the disk it say's RVLU

What are the consequences if i go through with the upgrade and it for some reason isn't a "U" version.... can a "repair be done?"

I also have a couple of other games that required an update, but thes are either european on jap version.... so will the one update work for all?

    Thanx.

ok tried the disk, and it did the update.... and i got the mario galaxy caption in the menu......and then when i try and load the game it goes to the black screen of death....and on the remote...all four blue light's flash and the wii can't be turned off...this is continuious, so i unplugged it at the wall, and reset it, and can get the menu, and the old games work but not the mario galaxy, I tired this twice!!

If i buy the game legit, in a euro version will it then work, as this is all he want's for christmas...or should i try and get the legit US version?

    will have another go tomoz....g'night!
