CAN I UPGRADE USB HDD From 500GB To 1TB??

Hello.

I have been playing my Wii Games From My 500GB Maxtor USB HDD...I have Now got a spare 1TB USB HDD (Western Digital - Currently NTFS) and would like to use that.

Is it compatible??

How do i go about formatting it to WBFS???

Links to guides would be useful!

I read somewhere that the wii has problems reading 1TB Drives....is that true?

do i need to upgrade my softmodded wii in any way??

I think i know how to copy the contents of my 500GB drive to my 1TB Drive Using : WiiBAckUpManager

But any help or tips would be greatly appreciated...

It downgrades system menu to 4.1 from 4.3 (altho my wii is not working perfectly (Wads wont install (PLS SEE BELOW FOR THAT PROBLEM AND LINK)))

tut on usb loading with fat32, backup manager can format to wbfs i think, or get wbfs manager, similar prog.

advanced search function and recommended guide section is also your friend

Yes i have had to delete some games to put other games on!

I will check that out and hopefully have a duplicate copy of games on HDD...

Does that mean i dont have to format the drive to WBFS but can do it as fat32?? I have both wbfs manager and backup manager as i dont think you can add a WBFS file with WBFS manager but can with Wii Backup Manager!

nice collection then;)
you can go with partioning and have a game part as wbfs, but with the guide, a wbfs folder and your backup manager you can stick with fat32, some games need to be splittet as they exceed the fat 4gb limit but thats no problem at all. also you can plug in your old wbfs drive and copy straight away to your new drive (loading one in list A other in B).

Think i have got like 200 games from demonoid, added to the ones i have got and borrowed from mates... 500Gb = 300 games (depending on file sizes) Am i right in thinking i can store movies etc on HDD to...(Maybe thats my next thread!)

I have run the syscheck on my previous thread to if you can help there to... (Wads wont install!)

when i have done copying i will try to post how and method etc...(just for future reference for others)

Ok I am currently transferring my wii games from my 500GB Maxtor HDD to my 1TB WD HDD

It's gonna take a while to transfer 500GB! (i know from experience!)


I'm hoping I will have 2 HDD both containing my wii games, As im gonna sell my old white wii with the maxtor hard drive too!

I also suggest unplugging all un-needed HDD, as i didnt, and have 10 HDD's connected! this got quite confusesing when i partitioned harddrives!! then you have to select them in WBFS manager!!! I had to triple check every step cos i diodnt wanna format the wrong Drive!!!! that would hurt.....!!!

Partitioning the HDD

1. Plug your Wii HDD into a PC USB port

2a. From the WinXP: Right click on My Computer> Go to Manage>Click on Disk Management

2b. From Vista/Win7: Go to Control Panel> Administrative Tools>Computer Manager>Disk

3. With your disk drive loaded and visible: right click on the Wii HDD and choose to delete either the entire volume or a partition

4. Right click on new HDD in lower part or graphical portion of window and click New

There are some other options that appear here... they are obvisiousnot that i can remember what they were...!

5a. Choose to assign a letter to your new drive partition

5b. Choose NOT TO FORMAT!!!!
when you create your new partition. Chose the size of the partition;

Partitions I made:
New WD 1tb = 953859 (GB?)

I selected 240000 for Nfts or FAt32 (If i need Both I'll split it in half which i can do at a later stage if required!)(Around 230GB)

And had 713857 left for storage of my wii games i wanna copy...(Just under 700GB)

I dont where or what happen to the rest of the space? if there is any! (11gb??)


make sure and leave space for the FAT32 partition, and also if you want to create an NTFS partition for files >4GB. Use 2.5GB per Wii game to estimate current and future needs. WBFS Manager has a 500 file limit so no more than 500 games despite available space.

5c. Make your new partition PRIMARY and ACTIVE

Format the Wii HDD with WBFS Manager (WBFS partition)

1. Run WBFS Manager 3.0; for WBFS Manager for MacOS, make sure to first start WBFS Manager for MacOS and THEN plug the Wii HDD into your PC USB port.

2. Select your new drive letter (the drive partition created in Step 5a) and press Format. If the drive does not show, Press Refresh Drive List. To access or use the drive, press the LOAD button.

To copy the games from 1 drive to another i used "wii backup manager"

Here's how:

Wii Backup Manager can do drive to drive transfers in any combination of FAT, NTFS & WBFS filesystems.

Just set your drives on the Drive 1 and Drive 2 tabs.
Choose what games you want to transfer from whatever drive by using the check boxes.

Then click on Transfer and choose the opposing drive.

Bingo!!

Now for my other issues with my wii!!!

Ok the transfer is complete... wii backup manager didnt copy all the games to my 1TB WD HDD missed about ten off... cant figure out why...didnt get any error messages!?

The problem now is that USB Loader GX does not display the games....

The screen is blank and displays Games:0 it doesnt even show the ???gb free of ???gb info on HDD...

I then checked to see if the games would load from my 1tb HDD WD HDD fromBackup disk channel... and they did... so i know that the games are there... they just arent found by USB Loader GX....

How can i get USB Loader GX to find the games.... ???? i wanna use that program to load games as i can view PNG files.. etc..

so what is the partition order on your hdd right now?
wbfs (primary,active) ->fat32 or ntsf
games on the wbfs part of course

i switched to fat32 usb loading ending up gx doesn't see my hdd.
but i like wiiflow much more, cool themes, cool coverflow art, and had no major issue using it or loading any game

er sorry im not a master at this a you can probably tell...!!... my 1TB HDD atm Has a ~700gb partiton for WBFS files and~300GB partition that is NFTS

I assume i put WBFS to Primary and active... all the games are readable from backup disk backup and wiibackupmanager...

wii flow looks nice ro what i see... shall i just try that and use that as my loader??? and hope it works?

i would do so, i did so;)
was just a point, i don't want to say everytime something don't work use something else, but sometimes you reach a point and get annoyed and spent too much time in it already.

as putting a new loader in the app folder isn't too complicated you can try so many till you find that one which is working for you and you are satisfied with.

i gave up on gx, maybe a newer version of it works better for you

you can still check if you installed your wbfs as farst partition, primary and active by going back to the partition tool you used
