Is it ok to do online wii update for a wii hybrid unit? [ntsc-j converted to ntsc-u]

I've been searching for the board but I cant seem to find a case related to mine

1. Is it ok to connect to the internet/ online on my wii with modchip? (such as wiiconnect24, internet, etc.)

2. I wanted to ask is it ok to update a wii with a modchip online?

3. Lastly my main concern, My wii is originally an ntsc-j wii but converted to ntsc-u wii (May also be called as a hybrid). Is it still ok to update my wii online?

[As what i was told on where I purchased my wii. My modchip is D2c2. and once more it is originally an ntsc-j wii unit but converted to ntsc-u. Currently im running on 3.2u instead of 3.xj]

Hi neh004, welcome to the WiiHAcks community.

1) yes currently its ok to connect a modded wii to internet/online/wiiconnect24

2) Generally yes its ok to update online even if Wii is modded, its actually recommended rather than risking updating from a game disc of another region which would brick the Wii. But your 3rd question puts a twist to this.

3) This I'm not certain about, if you used Anyregionchanger to change the Wii entirly to NTSC-U including fm, language, region, then it may be ok but I have not heard of a case like this so I couldn't really tell you 100%. Also you might want to hold off on updating as a new update was just released and more information is coming as to what exactly this update will do and how it will affect a modded/hacked wii. So wait a while.

Thank you so much

Thank you so much for the answers and information.

Yes, everything in my wii is like the ntsc-u wii unit.
  • The languages to what i recall are english spanish and the other one is french.
  • The countries there i think the same as ntsc-u consoles such as United States, etc.
(is it true that changing the country would affect the unit?)
  • The firmware is currently running at 3.2u not at 3.xj meaning that the unit is now running at ntsc-u. The unit also accepts updates from ntsc-u dvd games.
(Also wondering why does my news and forecast channel duplicates in doing so after i update[currently i have 3 duplicates 1jap 2eng])

The only information i got from the store is that the wii unit has a d2c2 chip and hacked to change the region from j to u (this i dont know how).

Im just scared to update my unit online cause it may connect to the jap server and update the unit to ntsc-j causing the potential brick.

Please do update me if you have more details regarding the third question. And if its safe to update on the current firmware version of wii ^_^

Thank you so much ^_^

The reason you got duplicate channels means you updated froma game that was different region than your wii. If you did this after changing the wii to ntsc-u is an indication that updating from the internet may also be a problem. If you are still able to access Wii settings then at leaset it did not semi-brick your wii, but it shows that it still knows that it is a Jap wii since it loaded Jap weather/news channels. You can remove duplicat channels using DuplicateChannel Remover (search forum). But do not update your wii online yet as I mentioned a new update was released and we need to know about it first.
