Well this is my theory about -r and +r i'm not sure if it is precise but here it goes: dvd-r requires no bitsetting, cause once data is burnt to the disc the burner automatically sets the booktype in the most precise manner for any drive to pick up the disc as if it is a dvdrom so in other words, it can trick any dvd drive (whether is computer, dvd player or video game system) stating that it is a dvdrom finds whatever bootcode and allows the drive to play it fast and efficient.
Dvd+r requires manual bitsetting (with some drives) and it seems the software that sets the bitset, doesn't work as efficient and tries to emulate the bitset and forces the disc to be a dvdrom but the dvd drive doesn't pick up the data very quickly and sometimes ends up as a coaster disc (data burnt to the disc but doesn't pick up on drive) and as you can see how the wii is the most pickiest system in the world (very similar to a ps1) (not straying on the topic). So I will prefer to use the dvd-r to the dvd+r and i will recommend that you use the -r too. (now my theory may not be precise if you have another explanation, share it don't hide it)
