Yes thanks for that Dave. That's an incredible little hardmod, I had noticed the ad images on the site but didn't bother clicking it.

Hardmods are getting very clever these days.
Not really doing much Wii stuff these days.

Forgive my ignorance, but I'm struggling to work out what that actually does and the web site isn't 100% clear. If I understand correctly, this replaces the DVD drive with a HDD controller. To run a game you select the Gamecube channel which gets you into the modchip's menu, select the ISO to mount, and the Wii reboots with the mounted ISO available to boot. Is that correct? Is there a software component to this on the Wii itself? Is it update proof?

    EDIT -
There's a nice description of the product here:
    http://www.chipspain.com/en/wii-115/...-wii-3718.html

"The Sundriver is the first modchip with full HDD support with a fully concealed install. It allows you to play backups off an internal SATA 2.5" hard drive. Since this is a hardware mod you do not need to worry about patches and bricking the Wii like you do with softmods. There is zero soldering involved and everything is plug and play. This chip is fully upgradeable. The entire chip and hard drive is installed inside the Wii. This is done by replacing the DVD drive compartment with the Sundriver + HDD."

The feature list reports that no homebrew software is required for this to work. I assume therefore that the device emulates a GC game which, when launched, presents the device's menu for ISO mounting. Any it's less than 50EUR. This is very tempting!

Won't be long until we have very high capacity sd hc and pen drives to play games off of. Think about a 2tb sd card? This is not just a dream look: Next Generation SD card specifications announced | CES 2009 - CNET Blogs

Just hope ninty allow use with the sdxc in an update

In the meantime, I'm seriously considering a SunDriver! I just hope it is truly update-proof. I'm assuming the only connection is to the IDE interface. Is that correct? Is it possible for the Wii to detect this?

So I can confirm that games require the presence of the DVD controller board at a minimum to boot off USB HDs. I have CIOSx r21 installed, the Wii hangs without the controll board, but when its installed much USB love. I think you could probably solder on a small usb2 hub to the internal USB standoffsand run a internal HD with a SATA-USB adapter, right on top of the DVD controll board.
