So my DVD ROM in my wii died, looking to buy another but....

So I went to put wii music in the other day, it dragged in most of the way then stuck I hit eject and it didnt come out so I went to grab it and it sucked in properly but the disc wouldnt read.

My guess is either the laser got pushed out of position and cant return or the laser got stuck. So now it just keeps coming up with the "An Error occurred, eject the disc blah)

My drive has been pretty noisy for a few months and it always takes a long time to read the discs when going to the disc menu. I figured it was on its last legs anyway.

Now I am waiting for a trigram screwdriver to arrive and then am going to pull it apart and see what model drive i have (pretty sure it is a D2B as I bought this in 07 and the serial matches on the serial database tracker thing)

However my question is, can I buy any, say a d2E or something and use that? or do I specifically need to buy a D2B drive?

Is it likely the laser was damaged or do you think fiddling with the current drive might revive it?

Anyway more than anything just want to know if I can use any drive like this one on ebay?

I am in Australia.

I just found out that when My mrs bought it for me a few years back she bought an extra 2 years extended warranty. Meaning it is under that warranty now, I am thinking of removing the softmod and returning back to virgin state and then sending it back in to get the drive replaced.

I have 2 concerns with this

1 - They will find it was softmodded and refuse to fix it, so I have a broken wii still
2 - They update is to 4.2 whilst there.

Does reversing the softmodding via the guide fully remove all traces?

Would I be better just buying the drive and putting it in myself, I have no concerns about actually putting the drive in myself

there is no way ninty are going to allow the machine to be returned to you with all the mods still and and there is a good chance you'll be on 4.2 as well, id order that drive from e-bay ASAP and a tri wing screwdriver too, shouldnt take long to do...

just delete the softmod and send it in. there is a guide on here to install homebrew on a 4.2 wii if they update it. i updated mine its now a 4.2e with all the softmods in working order.
you will save yourself alot of cash. warranty is for when its broke!
