Want to avoid bricking my Wii

Can simply playing a friends original game on my modded wii brick it?
I've heard that the discs come with built in updates that can brick a modded wii?
Does this mean I should only play my own games on my wii (ones scrubbed with brick blocker?)
I have the original Wii Sports, can this harm my system as well?
Help please...I know more than one question....
Thanks.

if you are not on 4.1, install it (there is a guide on the tutorials) and then install preloader and block system updates. also install ioses 38 53 55

Thanks for the advice but I purchased this Wii off someone and I don't know which MOD I have or don't have. All I know is that it plays my backup DVDs directly with the Disc channel. No Homebrew.
I don't want to install or upgrade a bunch of stuff I know nothing about....
Menu systems, IOS, etc... that can possibly undo what was done....

I just want to ensure that running an original game won't affect my system...any simple way of doing this? I am using brick blocker on my personal ISOs but in case I use my friends games, I don't want my wii bricked.

Any additional help would be appreciated.
Thanks.

As Messie said preloader will stop updates. safest way without checking your system is to convert new discs to ISO's like you have and brickblock them. A bit unreliable though, someone else could load a disc and accept an update.

I'm reading stories that people bricked their wii while attempting to upgrade from 3.4 to 4.1 ? Is 4.1 the ONLY version that will allow this preloader to install and block the system updates?
Is there ANYTHING I can run on my 3.4U system that can automatically block system updates?

you thought correctly

@OP: just use the 4.1 updater, then install preloader. Simple.

i havn't worked out if you have a modchip or if your wii is softmodded. if you can put in a back up gamecube game - if it plays then you have a modchip and don't need to worry about system updates, if it doesn't then you have cIOScorp installed and you NEED to install preloader.

as others have said the only way to install preloader is to update the wii, which can only be done via firmware updater or connecting to wiiconnect24

I installed bootmii as boot2 and performed a NAND full backup to SD.
Am I at a safe point to attempt an system upgrade from 3.4 to 4.1?
If it fails, can I restore my NAND from the 3.4 backup and get my system back to where it was.
If I can 100% do this, then I will attempt to upgrade to 4.1 and install all the necessary blocking software at that point.
Thanks to everyone who has replied...you are really helping me out.
