    Lens Head Knocking and modchips

ok i posted a couple of weeks back about noise from the drive and not being able to play certain backup disks using my wiikey2.

Ive finally found out what the problem is. Its the lens head knocking against the thing the disk spins on.

Basically the lens is trying to go beyond its allocated travel distance and is banging against the plastic rotary gadget the disk spins on. Once this happens twice the disks stops reading giving the black error screen.

I also closely inspected my wiiclip and its falling off and is barely staying on i suspect that this also could be a culprit for the not reading of particular disks.

The funny thing is if you leave the wii off for a day and put it on all the disks work with no noises. Turn it off again for awhile and try again only some of them work. By some i mean bran A would work while brand B will not.

    So my questions are

    1. Is this an issue that has come up before ?
    2. Is there a known fix ?
    3. Should i just invest in another chip.If so what would be the best bet ?

The drive key seems to be recommended alot but there were warning about it running only at 3x and that in return causing high strain games like call of duty to cause problems..

    any advice would be appreciated.

The lens knocking is probably a consequence of not finding the data it is searching for at the location on the disc it is supposed to be at. I've noticed this noise on some DVD+RW I was testing burns on a while back. I don't recall getting black screens though.

    also

You already said the clip was loose. You might want to solder the chip in without the clip and see how it works after that.

Regarding the shut off thing, that's probably just due to warmth in the drive bay.

You could also try removing the clip and laoding the games through a softmod backup launcher and see if the symptom is repeated to outrule the clip.

yes i was wondering about the soft mod as well... im on fw 4.1 any good guides you can recommend ? although i must say ive been chicken all these days to install homebrew etc >.< was hoping i wouldnt have to.

The lens knocking occurs without the clip and key as well. Again only with that particular type of disks.

Ive tested 3 types. Lets call em A B C

Type A : Works without no issues no noise
Type B : Head kncks a couple of times and stops reading the disk. Unable to load disk error.
Type C : No noise spins for awhile black error screen

All three types used to work with no issues for abt 3 months till about last week.

I managed to pull the pins on the clip outwards slightly and now it clips on without an issue. Im wondering if i should try to pull em all outwards...

Well it sounds like your drive is on it's way out. By all accounts the drives are very poor and do wear out, especially with backups.

I'd install homebrew and a USB Loader and bypass the need for your Wii disc drive altogether.

You'll need an SD card and an external usb drive.

You need Bannerbomb to install Homebrew Channel. I don't have a link to hand but search here for it.

You'll need Wad manager 1.4, search for it, it might also be in Dogeggs signature.

You need to install a cIOS on your system Install cIOS This allows you to install other things.

    and then..
You need to install cIOS 38 Rev 13 this can be found in Dogeggs signature.

    and finally..
You can choose a USB loader, such as USB Loader 1.5, USB Loader GX, Coverfloader.

Don't worry it's not difficult. Each step will have a massive tutorial somewhere.

I started with hard mod and went soft mod when I heard about the USB loader thing.
