    gc2-d3 and DVDx

so i found out (sadly) that the most recent wii i've obtained will not play backups VIA disc. i was also reading that DVDx should not work. imagine my surprise, after installing DVDx, my copy of avatar loaded up after about 30 second in mplayerCE.

i was under the impression that this was not possible due to nintendo removing the dvd function out of this (and later) firmwares...

You got lucky. I am sure there were probably a lot of on the cusp consoles in retail inventory, and probably 1 out of 5 were a winner.

You buy it new? Possible drive swap out could have been done if not.
I have heard of stranger things happening, either way.

Rewritable media is the poorest media you could attempt this with. It has the weakest reflectivity of all media. I'd not let results on a rewritable draw you to the conclusion of D3-2 drive or similar. Get Verbatim DVD-R with Azo Dye and repeat the attempt.

its all i had and the wife has already gone to work for the night (oh the joys of being married to a LEO who works graveyard).

will head to wallyworld tomorrow and pick up a 5pack of some verbatim media. gonna search my place, i found a few dvd-r discs that were used, think i might have a few unused hiding somewhere...

purchased console used at a pawn shop. theyre having a sale on wiis right now, 29.99 each. last one i got came with 2 controllers and a copy of smash bros brawl in the drive

gonna head back tomorrow and get the last 3 they have, more than likely.

Last I knew, Wally World doesn't carry those. I used to buy'em locally at Sam's Club (yep, Sammy Walton got around), til they stopped carrying them. They carry JUNK MEMOREX nowadays and as they don't make a thing (rebadged cheapest media you can possibly get), avoid them like the plague.

wally world has verbatim. was there earlier picking up a pair of sd cards for these wiis. if they dont have any, pretty sure best buy or office depot will.

    -edit-

i should note that ive never bought AZO discs. always bought whatever verbatim discs whoever has had and havent had an issue yet. AZO is something new to me, and since ive never used it and have had no issues with regular verbatims, i see no reason to source out more expensive discs. i plan on using these discs just to test for dvd-r playback, nothing more, so not many are needed.

To simplify it: the so-called Verbatim "Life" Series do not feature Azo dye and typically have the junk CMC MAG media code (which is to be avoided). The rest do have it and it should say on the box... wish my Wal-Mart hadn't done away with them (and Sam's Club).

I got about 5 wallmarts an 3 SAMs club, about same distance in different directions from me, and they are mirror images of each other. Funny thing, every time I find a product I like there, I spend the money, but within 6 months they discontinue them. Been that way for years.
