Unhappy I want to back up my games, but worried I might pick the wrong hard drive.

I'm finally getting the nerve to try homebrew and all this good stuff now that my wii is firmly out of its warranty and our collection of wii games is just getting to bulky. Since spoiled by steam, cloud, having an HTPC for all video related things, I want to get my wii on the same terms.

I have an SD card picked out, I fully understand the methods to get homebrew on the wii, but before I can attempt these loader programs, I wanted to make sure I get a good USB drive.

My questions are, can one get a standard USB 2.0 empty enclosure, and buy a drive for it? Like combining these two products: Inclosure and say this hard drive?

Or will it have to be something more on the lines of this hard drive?

Does it have to be externally powered?

    Is there a capacity limit?

Are there compatibility issues I need to watch out for?

I would go for the Western Digital My Passport Essential. I had a silver one like that and it worked great. You can look at the usb compatibility list for drives.

Thanks for the reply. I figured I would have to get a pre built thing, I just like getting the most for my money with hard drives. But if I have to use that I will

I never used one with the inclosure, but I there are some on that list. I know what you mean about trying to get the best deal. The Costco by me had 1tb WD My Books on sale for $79.99, I wanted to buy them all. LOL. I have found most drives work usb powered, external powered, inclosures, but if you want to be sure get one that is on that list.

After looking through newegg, I forgot you can search reviews Pretty easy now to find who has had success with the wii. I think I'll snag a 2.5 empty box and slap in a laptop hard drive .
