    Some general semi-educated noobish questions.

OK, thanks to the excellent forest of helpful information here, I managed to:

    - Get homebrew running (note: you need an old remote for new Wiis to make it through Bootmii).
    - Get IOS236, d2x, and ultimately CFG usbloader running.
    - Install a forwarder channel and use it successfully to start CFG.
    - Still need to install StartPatch or Priiloader to prevent updates (which one would be more useful?).

Now I ran up against a few roadblocks for which I could use a little advice. Please forgive my relative noobishness.

    1. I can launch homebrew channel from the wii menu without the SD card that I used to get everything set up. I can launch USBloader from the forwarder channel with the SD card in, but it hangs at black and wiimote stops working when trying to launch without the SD card in. Does the SD card always have to be in to be able to run the forwarder channel like this?
    2. Every time I start USB Loader it stops and asks me what drive to use and I have to select the drive every time. I want it to recognize the USB drive and go right to its main menu when it is started via the forwarder channel. Is this just a config option I can pick in CFG usbloader?
    3. To see if this would all work, I made a 4.6 GB .iso and tried to copy it to my FAT32 formatted USB drive, and it returned an error that fat32 doesn't support > 4GB files. I thought the .iso would get split when copying it to the drive? What is the workaround for this? I want to be able to rip .isos and put them on the USB drive and just forget about the discs altogether so my kids aren't wrecking them and whatnot.

Again, I apologize for the relatively nooby tone of these questions, but navigating to answers amongst the sea of information is somewhat daunting, and there's bound to be someone out there who can quickly point me in the right direction. I'm close to where I want to get with the modding, and could use a little advice on these three questions.

    Thank you!

Wow... you are going about the entire process the hard way aren't you? There is a link in my signature to the Softmod Any Wii guide, I suggest you follow that. It will give you everything you need including Priiloader (startpatch is not what you want).

    1. HBC is a full channel install, it will always launc without the sd card. Forwarder channels are like shortcuts, the point to the sd or usb device.
    2. Yes, simple to fix.
    3. If you want the .iso to be properly split you need to use a game manager to transfer it. Wiibackup manager will do this for you. Ripping the disc directly to the usb device through the wii is the most efficient way to get the games copies... no need for a computer that way.

Look at the "must read for noobs" in my signature and it will enlighten you on pretty much everything you need to know. Then follow the Softmod any wii guide, just run it over what you have already done.

Thanks for the advice! I am somewhat reluctant to take a different direction and overwrite much of what I have already installed, as I think I'm pretty close to the goal of being able to start CFG from a channel and play off the USB drive. It sounds like I just need to tweak CFG to default to the USB drive, set up a backup manager, and set up priiloader.

If something goes awry in all of this and I cannot do what I need to do, I will remember your suggestion to follow your guide. There is a surprising amount of complexity available here; I wish there was an "org chart" style diagram to map out the prerequisite installations and whatnot.

Anyway, thanks again for the advice!

This is just me, but I highly recomend you follow the guide and do everything it tells you to. I understand that you could be weary about overwriting, however the guide modifies stuff that I don't think you would think of doing, for example if you chose to follow the steps the guide will make your wii think that it's always on the correct version, and not on a previous version, for some things, to help prevent accidental updates or getting your HBC removed. Following the guide will also give you 99% of everything you need for running about everything on the wii.

I'm just sayin' however, you can do what you wish with your wii.

OK, so I installed startpatch first, because I found a better tutorial for that. However, it doesn't seem to really be working. I applied all relevant updates and still get a "do you want to update?" code 73112 every time I try and connect to the internet. Is it possible and/or safe to install priiloader on top of startpatch?

Not a good idea. They do not play well together. Priiloader is a much better choice. Uninstall startpatch and install priiloader.

I really think you should listen to LINK and run the guide you were directed to. It will prevent you from having to come back and ask more questions that will likely result in responses containing "you should follow the softmod any wii guide".
