Wii Hangs When Attempting to Create Save Data

I tried looking for a solution to this but I haven't had any luck. I'm new to the whole Wii hacking thing. I've got the Homebrew Channel on my Wii and I thought I might as well try backing up my games to a spare external drive I have laying around. After spending a lot of time trying to get a game recognized on the drive(turns out this odd data cable that I have with 2 USB connectors to power 1 hard drive was the issue after spending a lot of time reformatting the drive several times and other junk), I finally did it and tried to play one of my games off of the hard drive. When the game starts up it asks me if I want to create save game data... of course I hit yes, and then it tells me not to turn the power off or reset while it's creating the data. The issue is that the system will hang here every time. I can still move the cursor around the screen just fine but it never finishes this process... almost like it can't find a suitable place to save the data. Did I miss a particular step when setting all this up?

I use Configurable USB Loader to get to Wiiflow, and from Wiiflow I launch the game. I've got an Acer 500GB external HDD formatted as a WBFS drive.

I'm sure I missed something really simple but I can't seem to find the solution. Any help would be appreciated.

How many blocks do you have free on the WII Internal Memory!

    Click Wii Button
    System Settings
    Data Managment!

    Should tell you there!!!

700-something blocks from memory. I was looking at that yesterday after a few hangs. I only own two Wii games at the moment so there's not much that could possibly be taking up that space. I also saw 7000-ish blocks on the SD card I've got in it if that helps.
