if you placed you original dvd into a wii and it works but not on yours it is possible that your dvd player on your wii is defective, if that is the case softmodding your wii and using a external usb HDD may be your only option, since your dvd player no longer reads discs.

It can't be. It was playing discs right before I updated it. It didn't just stop reading DVD's one day, it's a direct cause and effect. Even if I am the cause of it, what is the fix then?

Your SysCheck looks fine. It could be coincidence and the laser gave out. I still don't know exactly what you mean by "updating it," everyone should know never, ever to accept an official Nintendo update.

The remark of "it didn't just stop" after updating and the SysCheck showing everything good lead me to the conclusion stated above via Occam's Razor.

Honestly GRSHOPR, if the softmod did indeed cause your wii to not be able to read any discs at all, yours would be the first case I have ever seen of it happening, and I'm sure that would be the case with most everyone here on this site.

Some prior things that people have said who had a similar problem after the softmod:

thanks for your help. i took the front apart and found an sd card in there. It works now. I guess my 3 year old stuck it in there. sorry for wasting our time. I think disc error, maybe kid stuck something in there should be added to the error index.
Ok so I can't wait for the admin to approve this message because I want everyone who is gittin this error to know they need to check and make sure theyre not me because I'm the only one dumb enough to sit for 7 hours installing and uninstalling custom fw's over and over. Turns out I was simply putting the disk in upside down.
If you are absolutely certain there are no foreign objects in your wii, and you are absolutely certain you are inserting your discs the correct way, their are only two options: 1. somehow your IOSs got messed up (not sure how that could have happened), or 2. Your drive did indeed go bad. You can redo the Softmod ANY Wii guide to see if the problem relates to #1.

When I was referring to update, I meant loading newer revisions of the cIOS's and updating shop channel, etc, that's all. As for Occam and his sharp metal objects, he's a damn dirty ape, that's all I can say. I'll start pulling the Wii apart, seeing what the kids might have done to it.

I redid the softmod again, to make sure there was nothing wrong, and that's where that syscheck is from. Unfortunately, it looks as though it's all squared away. I will also double check with the kids. They may not have been telling me the whole truth, and the drive may have died earlier, without them really saying that... Punks....

OK, so apparently the fact that the Wii couldn't play a certain new(er) game trumped the need to mention the fact that it doesn't play ANY games. Drive it is, from the sounds of it. Is there a way to replace the entire drive? Spoof it with my current ID? Or is it not even that complicated and I can just swap in a similar drive model? I'd really prefer not to have to go down to component level, but I can if I have to.

Easier than the xbox lol. Just need to purchase a new drive and replace it... This might be handy ----> http://www.wiihacks.com/wii-modchip/...-your-wii.html -----> http://www.wiihacks.com/recommended-faqs-guides-tutorials-only/61802-replacing-your-wiis-internal-parts.html

If wanting to play backups from disc then you will need to get one of the older drives..... Look on Ebay...
