NeoGamma Fails to Launch Game from DVD

I have been running NeoGamma R9 beta30, cIOS38rev19 slot 249 on a Ver 4.2u Wii. I have had no issues launching backup games from DVD until recently when I had to open up the wii to make a repair. The disc loading mechanism malfunctioned and I had to open the console to first get a stuck game out and second to repair the loader - turns out a spring had fallen off. Anyway, I reassembled the unit and it loads and plays normal wii games no problem however for some reason I am now unable to load games from NG. When it runs through the process of loading from the disc it hangs on the second time "Init drive" displays. It then reads "DVD Read Timeout" and then "Searching Patch" and the system freezes. Not sure if it is because I had the battery out when I was making the repair but I am an amateur when it comes to the softmod stuff and had assistance when my console was done some time back. I have been reading trying to find out what the problem may be but am at a loss. I did see this post http://www.wiihacks.com/recommended-...d-any-wii.html and thought about doing a complete reinstall but before i did this I wanted to make sure there wasn't something i may be missing or need to try?
    Any advice is appreciated.
    Thank you.

Pob3008 - thank you for your quick response. I did make sure everything was cleaned before closing the drive back up and I would think that if it was a lens problem it wouldn't read the wii discs either, but it does.

It can still be the lens, it has to work harder to read dvd-r than wii discs. It can be a sign the lens is dirty or ready to pack up

Ok - makes sense. Maybe I should change over to usb loading instead. I know there is a list of compatible drives i saw somewhere but should I basically be able to use a standard IDE drive (i.e. Maxtor) installed in an external enclosure or am I wasting my time? is this a preferred option over toying with the dvd lens if it is still working for regular discs?
