    [SOLVED] Wii stops recognizing my hard drive after a short period of time

    Problem: At various times while trying to load game backups, the wii will freeze. I'm using CFG loader to load from my wbfs partition. I can always see the list of games. Sometimes when I click the "start" button, the button turns white and freezes. Sometimes when I click the "start" button it'll go into the "loading...." screen, and freeze. Sometimes it will boot the game and show the warning screen about "make sure to put on your wii strap", fades to black, and freeze. I have to restart the wii differently depending on when it freezes, if I'm still inside CFG loader I can just hit reset on the unit, but if a game has loaded I have to hold the power button for 10 seconds.

    also, when using the NES emulator (games are on my FAT partition) I can load 1 game, but if i exit out and select a 2nd game to play it will freeze and I have to hold the power button for 10 seconds.

    It seems like there's a stability issue with my hard drive, but I've checked on 2 different USB compatibility lists, and the one I'm using is listed as "works". http://www.wiihacks.com/recommended-...lity-list.html and USB Devices Compatibility List - WikiTemp
    Any ideas how I can fix this?

    Hard drive: Western Digital My Book Essentials USB 3.0 WDBACW0020HBK-NESN 2TB - (External Power Supply). It came with a spin-down after 30 minutes idle, which I disabled with "WD SmartWare"
    Partitions: 1st WBFS, 2nd FAT32. Fat takes the last 20 GB, and wbfs takes the rest. Partitioned with wbfs.exe (build 'delta'. Mod v1.0 by Sorg.)
    I've also tried the first partition being NTFS, and have same exact errors.

    System menu: 4.3U (used mailbomb method)
    Homebrew channel: 1.0.8
    CFG USB loader: v70
    IOS 236: IOS236 Installer v5
    IOS 249: cIOSx v21 -> base ios56 v5661
    IOS 250: cIOSx v21 -> base ios57 v5918
    IOS 202: cIOS 222 installer v5.1 -> base ios60
    IOS 222: cIOS 222 installer v5.1 -> base ios38
    IOS 223: cIOS 222 installer v5.1 -> base ios37
    IOS 224: cIOS 222 installer v5.1 -> base ios57

    I've been instructed to make the entire disk 1 fat partition, set as 'primary' and 'active'. I've done this, and am still getting intermittent issues. Sometimes I can even load a game and play it, but then I exit out and try the same exact game, and it'll freeze.

    Anyone have any ideas? I don't know what else to try

    Might sound stupid, but is your external drive plugged directly into a wall outlet, or a power strip?

    So I went out and bought a different hard drive (Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex 2TB STAC2000103) and it's having the same exact issue as the first one. The only thing I notice are that both hard drives are "USB 3.0 with 100% USB 2.0 compatibility". The only thing I can think of, is that both the seagate and the WD are lying about the 100% compatibility?

    It's plugged into a power strip, but I tested it directly into the wall and it changed nothing

    Do you have a flash drive big enough to fit one of your games on it to test if it's the Wii's USB slot messing up and not your harddrives?

    My old hard drive is a WD 160 GB (WD1600JD-55FYB0), inside an enclosure, KINGWIN SATA ATQ090612707. It works perfectly with the wii, no issues at all.

    I'm not sure then.

    If you still have warranty on the drive, try exchanging it out with a new one. Might be faulty.

    Well that's similar to what I had thought, but I already exchanged it with one of a different type, and I'm having the same exact issues. These are the two drives I've tried:
    • Western Digital My Book Essentials USB 3.0 WDBACW0020HBK-NESN 2TB
    • Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex USB 3.0 STAC2000103 2TB

    I just replaced my IOS 249: v21 with the older v17, and haven't had any problems since. Maybe something is wrong with v21?

    Hey Meiskam, Interesting findings. I run similar to you. I have heard a lot o talk about USB 3.0 connectivity problems. I run all my mods with mauis guide. Install priloader. Then update my 249 to rev 20 base 57 -v20 mainly for black ops, i'm using CFG 69b3 I have tried many games without fail on this setup. I watch this site closely for info and feedback on newer versions. still using my trusted lego game indiana pwns, hack, all the very best.
