Updated to 4.2U. Will not recognize DVDs at all.

I have tried the 4.2 guide. Is this the correct one since I already have 4.2u System Menu or do I need to downgrade and reupgrade? I have checked whether my Wii is capable of playing DVDs. I bought it new, never had it in for repair and ran the checker... There is a 100% chance the chipset is GC2-D2C (v1). When I first softmodded it I was able to play backup discs, I never tested movies.

Here is what I cannot do: Play retail discs from the channel screen. Play backups in CFGLoader. Emulators that support data DVDs will not recognize my disc of roms (it's worked before). I can't get any Media Player to recognize DVDs. If I use WinMC or WiiXplorer to view the DVD contents it takes forever and comes up blank.

Is it possibly a hardware issue and the dvd drive is broken physically?

Any ideas of where I should start would be great and I don't mind wiping everything clean and starting from scratch if it fixes it.

    Progress

I used the guide to update an already softmodded Wii to 4.1u, eventhough mine is 4.2u. I used MMM to patch the ios's, installed all the wads that came with the package, installed rev17 and than finally Wanikoko(sp?) 4.1 Custom. Afterwards I can now see a retail disc on the channels! I loaded up up WiiMC and I got the AHDProt error. I installed ios58 and DVDx and now I can't play retail discs again Soooooo I went back did everything as above, though 4.1 installer doesn't do anything other than restart the wii but I see the retail disc again. Boot up WiiMC and get the error that it's not a recognized DVD, exit to Channels and no more Retail disc.

I'm sure its not a hardware issue now but the IOSs I have installed. Is there a list of IOSs you should have and their versions or at least a log of ioscheck of perfectly working up to date Wii? Thanks for any help.

Maybe it is best if you install system menu X: [ADVANCED]"The Impossible-To-Update" Wii (Super Hard To Brick). Install it, then update online, then reinstall the HBC. Do be carefull: this is an advanced mod.
