Preventing a boot2 update with boot2v5 (or higher)

I have been messing with SNEEK lately, and I noticed that it has the version of boot2 as v5 so it doesn't get overwritten. Would that be possible to do outside of SNEEK (on the actual Wii), or can it only be done with a virtual NAND? It is my understanding that boot2 can only be updated with an app like Dop-Mii, but not a wad manager. Is that correct?

I know this would dangerous, and I don't plan on doing it. I just wondered if it was possible. If it was (and there was a safe way of doing it), it would prevent Nintendo from overwriting bootmii as boot2. It would especially be useful for System Menu X.

I hate bumping this a second time, but I am really curious about this.

Well you can get a boot2v4 wad and change it to v5 and install it. I don't think the version number is checked anywhere (although it might be as I'm just guessing). I wouldn't try it.

Excuse me, but what would change if you simply renamed the .wad? SNEEK seems to have a custom boot2, which the user is asking for. Not to be rude, but what difference would it make to rename it? (if that's hot what you meant, please specify. I too am interested.)

Did I say rename it? No I said change it to v5. Meaning change the version number manually... not rename the file. Again, I wouldn't do this and there is really no reason to update boot2 as there is no reason to update your wii (via official update) so it will never be overwritten.

The version of Boot2 is stored in the nand and some other unknown location. Here is an example.

When Bootmii/Boot2v4 sectors are flashed into a nand with Boot2v2 via a programmer and a utility is used to check the version (such as bootmii or DOP-Mii) the previous version of boot2 is what is what the Wii thinks is installed. You have to manually update Boot2 to version v4 with DOP-mii or similar to get everything to match. I don't know if just changing the version manually force the hash/check to be updated in the unknown location......

If someone can change a boot2 wad to v5 then I will be willing to try it out.

If it's stored in the wii then how would changing it to v5 on a PC update the version number where it's stored ? Just asking as I don't understand how that would work. Unless I misunderstand you.

I don't know either but I do know that when boot2 is updated manually via DOP-mii the version number follows. Whether or not it will except a v5 and not cause the Wii to crash is a big unknown.

Ohh I get it, misunderstood you sorry. Well I can give you a boot2 v5 wad if you are willing to test (I just don't see the point). Will PM it to you.
