Do I have to connect my wii to the Net?

I want to get my wii modded for my backup games. Is it true that future firmware updates can ruin my modded wii? Do I have to connect to the internet in the first place? I have no interest in downloading games or playing online games.

Thanks for any advice. My wii is D2E btw.

if you're modding it with a chip updates so far can not ruin anything, and I somehow doubt they can as the way nintendo seems to try and block of chips is by making new chipsets everytime, and changing the internal board design.

Like Admiral said, future firmware and even current versions kill Wii homebrew. The Homebrew Channel is quite useful because of the application "Wad Manager". The Wad Manager will allow you to install WiiWare / Virtual Console games to the dashboard.

If you're interested in the Homebrew Channel and you're at the 3.3 or 3.4 firmware, you'll have to downgrade. The downgrade process requires an internet connection.
