Best way to softmod Wii that doesn't read game dvd's anymore (spare parts available)

    Hi,

A friend had a wii that was softmodded without any preloader or boot2 modifications. It was running on version 3.4E. Now he updated his Wii so everything was gone, I said I could softmod it again, but when starting, we noticed that the Wii isn't reading the game dvd's anymore. So the first question, can this be something that is caused by the update? Of is it just the laser that is broken, because it is more then 6 months ago that he played a game via a disc.

The other question is, what is the easiest mechanical way of softmodding this Wii? Because I have 2 wii's of my own, a white one and a black one, but the black one is just catching dust. So I would like to replace his laser with mine, softmod it and then replace it back. But maybe it's easier to have something out of his Wii, that I put in my Wii, softmod it, and then place it back in his Wii. Like the memory or something that I can change and put in his Wii back.

And is there someone who has a reliable video on youtube on how to replace the laser or the memory or anything that should help.

    Thanks already and good wishes!

All wiis are softmodded the same way. Follow the guide that matches your system menu (link below) and then follow a tut to get your hdd working

But to softmod 4.3E, you need lego indiana jones to softmod it, I have that game, but the Wii isn't reading discs anymore, so I can't start with the guide, that's why I need to know what's the easiest, replacing the dvd laser, or put the nand memory in my good working wii and then start with the guide. And the old softmod wasn't modded with priiloader installed, so I can't start hackmii that way.

If a game disc hasn't been used in it in 6 months I would try cleaning the laser before getting to worried about something being broken.

And how can I clean it without opening to much? I have such a clean cd, but on a normal cd-player I have to select track 3 and then it cleans, so I think I can't use that. Any other ways or anything?

Well they do have a Wii cleaning kit but its almost $50. I would try running your regular cd cleaner through it with the cleaning fluid or alcohol. It wont be able to read it but it will move the laser around while the disc is spinning before saying it can't read it. Try that a few times then let it sit for a few minutes to dry. Then try your original Wii disc. If the Wii was in a house with a smoker you might have to end up opening it up and cleaning the laser directly. I'm sure you can find guides to do that on here if it comes down to that.

I tried a CD cleaner in my wii, multiple tries with no results. Then I purchased a Wii lens cleaner, this one made by Nintendo, and it did a good job cleaning my lens, and it was only $10.
