right, I didnt mean that to sound as snappy as it did. I just want to installing those cIOSes got me a "Disc_SetUSB failed" in wiiflow, loading with 250 worked, installing cIOS 249 rev 19 worked. I assume it's just because I have the games loading from a FAT32 partition, now, and 249 was rev17 in that rar you linked to.

homebrew still blackscreens at startup. wiiflow still freezes at the splash screen. IOSes don't seem to be the trouble... not those 4, anyway. this wii has seen a lot, I first softmodded it years ago, and there's a good chance I installed a few cIOSes I shouldn't have. is there a pack that I can use with Multi Mod Manager to install all the right IOSes? would it be safe to assume I've never altered any of the origional IOSes? if so, I'm going to try deleting all the ioses above 200 and then re-install those 4 waninkoko cIOSes and maybe hermes cIOSes again...

I knew that 249 wouldn't work for FAT32 USB loading. I left it there for things like disc loading and homebrew utilities. Use 247,248, and 250 for USB loaders. If you want to install hermes cIOS's, download them here:
    Hermes cIOS Wads.zip
Don't delete any cIOS's (or IOS's at all, for that matter). That won't solve anything. Your official IOS's wouldn't affect USB loading.

Right now I think a system check would help.

PS: I don't get how you installed the wads if your HBC doesn't work.

ok, I was planning on runnning a system check before updating all my IOSes, but forgot and started the batch wad install. I decided aborting the wad manager mid-IOS install just to go run a system check would be a bad idea. I'm also re-installing all of waninkoko's and herme's cIOSes. if it's not an IOS problem, what else could it be?

oh, and homebrew works fine without the USB HDD plugged in. it doesnt' get past the black screen when it's plugged in when loaded and freezes if it's plugged in anytime after that.

just as wiiflow works fine if I wait until it asks me to plug in a usb drive to plug it in. What would be different at loading time? does it load one IOS that can't handle the drive even being present, and then call on a different one when it needs the drive?

It sounds like it is your USB drive's fault, but let's try one more thing. See if using this version of WiiFlow works:

I doubt there is anything you can do about the HBC except only use an SD card.

I would have thought it was the drive's fault long ago, it's quite cheap. the only problem is that another wii that I softmodded works just fine. I haven't tried loading homebrew apps from it, but it can stay attached while homebrew is loaded, and wiiflow goes right from the channel through to title browser. I really wish it were simple to just flash his nand to mine

Yeah, the fact that it works on another Wii is weird. Did you try the other version of WiiFlow?

edit: I"m wrong... I just realized what's happening with wiiflow, I think. I forgot it's just a forwarder channel installed on my system menu, if I have the drive plugged in, it just opens homebrew and starts the app while it displays the NForwarder Wiiflow screen. homebrew won't load with the drive plugged in, though, so it freezes at the splash screen. my friend's homebrew channel loads fine with the drive plugged in, so the forwarder doesn't freeze.

it wouldn't matter what version of wiiflow I use, it still has to go through homebrew channel. either I leave the drive unplugged and start the forwarder, or I start homebrew with the drive unplugged and start whatever version of wiiflow I want...

I've reinstalled the homebrew channel a couple times, now... but maybe it'll be different now that I updated the IOSes.... maybe

It doesn't go through the HBC, and yes, it matters what version of WiiFlow you use.

damn, thought I was on to something there. the 222 version of wiiflow won't load at all, neither from the forwarder nor the HBC, with or without the drive present. even if it worked from the forwarder, I would have to keep turning my HDD off when I wanted to load HBC to play emulators and stuff, anyway.

I'm out of ideas. until I can get my friends wii over here and compare his syscheck report with mine, I'll just have to really remember to turn the HDD off after I play a game, so it won't freeze my wii next time I want to play something. I'll just have to have it out on the table with the wii so I can turn it on and off when I need it... it so crappy and ugly, though, I want to hide it somewhere and just be able to leave it alone

thanks again for all your suggestions, I'm sure my wii is somehow better off now than it was before. I learned some stuff in the process, too. you may see me again when I get the other wii and can compare mine with a working one.
