Question HBC+Apps = Jumpy Cursor/Unresponsive: Updates Fail! Maybe IOS222 at fault? HELP!

    Hi there,

    So some background first....

I have a 3.4E Wii with HBC 0.6. I put IOS222 (Hermes) onto it to bring it right up to date as indicated here:

    http://gwht.wikidot.com/hermes-ios2a22-223

Everything was running fine and then for no reason I'm aware of, one day I noticed the cursor was jumping around rather than scrolling smoothly. It was doing this in my Configurable USB Loader (release 60 - 222mload) and NOT in the main Wii System menu or in any games. I tried a few different versions of Configurable USB Loader, older and new Beta's, but they were all the same as regards the pointer operation.

I tired a different Wii remote and recalibrated the sensor bar / cleaned it etc. but this made no difference.

I cleaned the sensor bar too and checked that all the infrareds were working using a digital camera phone to see them - all looks good and seems to be working, and anyway, it is fine in the Wii System menu and games.

I then noticed that this strange behaviour was happening in all HBC apps, so USB Loader GX, main HBC, Loadmii etc. Anything that sits on top of the HBC has this problem. Bootmii does not, I guess because it runs at a lower level and does not sit on top of HBC. Correct me if I'm wrong on this please.

Loadmii v0.3 is particularly sluggish, which is nuts considering there is nothing more than some text on screen!

So I tried to update HBC from 0.6 to 0.8, and I tried this via two methods, the auto internet update and the Hackmii installer from an SD card. Both of these failed giving the following screen dump errors:

I read somewhere that this error happens because there are USB devices in the back...so I removed them all and tried again but got the same memory dump page.

Can anyone explain what is going on here. I want to be able to update everything and get rid of this annoying jumpy cursor problem and unresponsive HBC apps. It is basically unusable in its current form.

Now I'm no expert, but could this be because I have replaced standard IOS36 with Hermes IOS222/223? But then this does not explain why it has worked fine for months on IOS222/223.

Is there any way I can go back to a standard unhacked Wii and start over?? Although I'd rather not do this unless I absolutely have to.

    Help please!

    Thanks.

Well, I am quite certain that Hermes IOS222/223 is not the cause, because the HBC does not use this IOS. I would try installing IOS58 en then try to install the latest HBC. If that doesn't work, you could try launching the loader using the bannerbomb or the twillight hack. If that still doesn't work, then something is wrong and we will need a syscheck to see what's the problem.

Well I've got to say this is all very strange. Everything is working fine now and I can't explain why.

Sure, I've had the SD card in and out a few times as part of my checks, but I can't imagine this has anything to do with it (although maybe there was a bad connection - I doubt it so very much).

I managed to update the HBC over the internet, worked fine, no dumps, USB devices not connected to be certain. All worked great. Very strange and the complete opposite of my experiences over a number of hours yesterday evening. Could my Wii be breaking / developing an intermittent fault? I will certainly be keeping a close eye on it from now on.

I installed IOS58 as you suggested anyway...the WiiBrew page for IOS58 seemed to indicate it was a good thing to have.

I ran SysCheck from HB Browser and this reported the following:

    Code:

Is there anything noticably wrong here? I cannot see anything to my untrained eye.

Thanks and if the problem comes back I will post again and try to be more systematic about symptoms.

    All the best!!

Well, it seems fine to me, although I do recommend updating cIOS249 to rev17.

    That's great, thank you.

Would this be the cIOS 249 latest revison - although this is revision 20 and not revision 17 that you mention.

    Removed

Or, perhaps you would recommend this instead:

    http://www.wiihacks.com/recommended-...installer.html

I also found through my investigations that there seems to be a simple way to update or return a soft-modded Wii to a clean state using ModMii:

    ModMii for Windows - GBAtemp.net

Finally, Is there an automated way to make sure that all relevant IOS's are the most current version?

    Thanks again.

I would recommend the second one, the one by wiihacks. Furthermore, I do not recommend updating IOS' (because you can breaak things if you do) when it is not needed. You can update them when stuff is not working.

Okay, the Waninkoko one is the one I was thinking looked most reliable as well to be honest. I will do this.

Someone on another forum who is also looking at my SysCheck output said my Wii was "hopelessly out of date", and they advise using ModMii to update and rehack my Wii.

Do you know why? Is this because I'm running 3.4E?

Do you know the advantages of running 4.1 or 4.2 instead of 3.4?

    Thank you once more!

Well, your IOS' are indeed a bit old, but there is not anything wrong with that per se. Some games require more recent versions of a IOS to be installed, but you can install them when you need them. If you don't need to update them, then don't. There is always a risk that things go wrong (mostly by user errors), so it is best to leave things as they are if things work.

Is there a way to backup my existing IOS set or invididually, so that I can then set about updating them in turn with the saftey option of recursing versions if something breaks?

Thanks for your help. It's really helping me to understand.

Priiloader. Follow the softmod any wii guide...this will update you to 4.1 and update your cIOS and install priiloader.

Well a nand backup does this but you shouldn't restore unless it's needed. There is no reason to mess with your IOS. If you like, there is an option in the softmod any wii guide to update them.
    Damn I suck!!!!
