I've been using a 4gb sd card of some brand name I don't remember, it didn't work for the wad installer or some other stuff, a 512mb Sandisk did the trick though.

maybe it's because I've got 2.7 gb of data on the 4gb sd card that some of my roms won't load - maybe they're in the upper 7gb region of the card? (if it's true that the wii only reads it as a 2 gb...)

You can use larger cards but the Wii and/or apps are sometimes picky on the brand. You might think about putting the apps and roms on a USB drive or go buy a Sandisk 4G SD (not SDHC or mini) card.

any SD over 2gb is going to be HC (at least I haven't been able to find one).

that's a good idea, I do have a USB drive.

the problem I'm facing right now is putting my wii games on an external drive - some games are over 4gb and vfat isn't capable of files that large. I've heard NTFS can be used somehow but searching these forums, I can't find anything.

Your right. I have never looked for a card bigger than 2G. I couldn't find one thats not a SDHC either. But to be honest, I don't think you would ever need one bigger than 2G unless you had many, many VC or WiiWare wads and wanted to play them from your SD card.

so before I completely hacked my Wii, I've been noticing the drive light on for no reason when the console was off, I unplugged it thinking it was something I did. but now I find this:

Wii, DSi Firmware Updates Squash Homebrew Support

what the hell man?! I disabled online updates via priiload, am I safe from this nonsense?

how does it not? it's a Wii update that's screwing with Homebrew...

the updates also reportedly remove support for a number of flash cards, mods, and other solutions for running pirated and homebrew software. Users on the GBA Temp forums (via Gamasutra) were among the first to discover the quiet disabling of unauthorized software on Nintendo's platforms. While a handful of homebrew devices apparently still work on the DSi, this week's Wii firmware update seems to have once again eliminated all current workarounds for running unapproved programs -- potentially even disabling some modified systems altogether.
