Ca Read disc error after updating 3.3

I keep running into a 'cannot read disc error' since updating the firmware to 3.3U. The Wii still recognizes most of the discs and even gets me into the title screen, but run into errors when I tried to start a game or load up the save data. The ones that I could play may run into the same problem during the game, the game will freeze and pop up with 'cannot read disc, pls refer to wii menu'; When I ejected and inserted backed in will work sometimes. I brought my wii more than a year ago, and took it to a shop to mod it. He told me its wii key but i honestly don't know. Could anyone help me out here? Based on the 'symptoms', is it related to firmware? Modchip problem? Wii defective? If its firmware, is there anyway to dn grade it back to 3.1? If its the modchip, could i get somebody to 'replace' a new one in there? Or its actually my Wii and there nothing to fix it? THX in advance for the reply.

PS: The Wii is a NTSC US/Cdn Region 1, and the firmware is updated directly from the wii menu, not thru disc, so I don't think its related to region code type of error

Hi ctomfung, welcome to the WiiHacks community.

There could be several reasons for the issue you are experiencing :

    - Some of your discs may be trucha signed in which case you would need to use GeckoOS to load the discs

    - It could be Modchip firmware issue. You could try downloading the latest WiiKey firmware and config disc images from Wiikey.cn and see if it is recognized by your wii. If it is, then that means you have WiiKey and you then update firmware if it is not already updated.

    - You could also try downgrading your Wii back to 3.2U using AnyRegionChanger, this will require you to have Homebrew channel installed first.

    Hi,
Its possible the games were 'scrubbed' , in this case you'll need to launch them through geckoOs like jbloggs stated. 'scrubbed' games are trucha signed, and seems to be one of the most common problems if you didnt make the backup yourself from the original.

Thx guys for the quick reply. I actually almost convinced myself that its my modchip issue, and came up with a solution by thinking of bringing it to a shop and reinstall a new modchip to 'fix the problem.'

With the 3 suggestions from jbloggs, using homebrew will be my last resort coz it seems very complicated to be able to use homebrew at the first place.

I did remember some of the 'backup' games that I got were 'scrubbed' from the web, so GeckoOS seems like a possible solution. Where could I get it? Is there walkthrough on how to use it?

I think i'll borrow my friend's wiikey disc to see if mine is genuine. Also i will use a original zelda to see if mine have the read disc error. That way will confirm its not related to my wii's hardware itself.

ok, i checked my wii with a wiikey setup disc and it could read, so i assume the guy did sell me a wiikey mod chip. Also, i browsed thru some links from the FAQ and found out there's similar threads about 3.3U update, which means I could've got my answers by reading before posting my own question (Duh!).

I thought GeckoOS would be a covinenent solution, but apparently its a HBC apps, which means I have use the homebrew, whether to downgrade firmware or load discs. I will stick my head to the newbie guide on homebrew and try to work on it.

Once again, thx you for answering my 'repeated' questions, and i'll post questions if needed.
