Having a hopeless time with USB Loader GX and my HDD. Please help!

Many thanks in advance by the way!

I'm still fairly new to the whole softmod scene, so bear with me please!

So I have 4.2J and installed HBC and NeoGamma v7 rev 14, no probs and have been enjoying games using backup DVD-Rs, including NSMB etc.

But I decided enough is enough with the DVDs, so have decided to go for USB Loader GX and an HDD etc.

So I went to install USB Loader GX as channel through WAD manager, and got this screen..

I didn't know which one to install...? In the end I just went for USB_Loader_GX-ULNR-r688.wad because it was the bigger file at 7.19MB! Was I correct to do that? If so, what is the meaning of the other USB Loader Forwarder file?

It seemed to go OK and installed a channel..

But why when I hold the pointer hand over the window, does it come up 'USB Loader GX r686c'? Is that right? Because when I look at other people's in youtube videos etc, they dont seem to have the r686c bit at the end.

But anyway, figuring I had done everything correctly, I went to plug in my USB external 300GB HDD, the screen came up saying not WBFS etc and I need to format, so I said OK, and then this screen..

It seems strange because it's saying about 4 partitions, but my drive is totally freshly formatted with no partitions etc.

Does this mean I've done something wrong along the way, or perhaps my HDD is incompatible? I've checked the incompatibility list for HDDs but mine is not on there! Mine is a I-O DATA one. I think it's some Japanese make. It is quite old actually and has an external power supply and inside you can hear it warming up and whirring a lot and then stopping etc. Does this sound like mine could be incompatible?

Sorry to sound like a total nOOb, but please help me with this. Please at least tell me whether I did the initial steps correctly.

    Many thanks!

Try formatting your HDD on the PC via WBFS Manager:

WBFS Manager - Release: WBFS Manager 3.0

Here's a video on how to use it, just skip to where the program tutorial begins:

If that doesn't work then I'm guessing the HDD is incompatible, but hopefully it'll work out, best of luck!

Thanks. Did I do the first steps correctly? With installing the wad file? I still dont know the difference between those 2 USB loader wad files!

Also I use a mac. I do have a WBFS app for the mac, but it wont let me format a usb drive..

As far as I know you installed USB Loader GX correctly, I myself installed it the exact same way so I'd scratch out an issue with the channel. The problem is with the HDD exclusively.

Do you have a PC with Windows near you? That's the only solution I can think of, I've never used a Mac.

Your best bet is to try formatting the HDD on a Windows PC (or Mac if you find a working app) and see whether or not the HDD is truly incompatible, that will make it clear.

hey. over the last few days i've been hacking my mates Wii which is 4.2E. After much effort it now plays backups via USB Loader GX via the homebrew channel. So i thought i'd make it easier for him, and load up USB Loader GX as a Channel. I get the same errors as you regarding the loader wanting to format the HDD. The hard drive has been partitioned as a WBFS drive, and works fine via the homebrew channel way. Any help would be greatly appreciated. The USB Loader GX channel is Rev815.

    Cheers!
