Question Having trouble getting games to load off IDE to USB enclosure.

    Hi all,

I recently installed Homebrew Channel, USB loaders etc onto my Wii. I installed cIOS 249 and then was using USB Loader GX to play off a 1Gb USB stick. I bought a 3.5" Ritmo "Stat" IDE to USB HDD enclosure to put an old 80Gb drive into and play games from that.

Originally, the enclosure would not detect on the Wii at all, even though it formatted to WBFS on the PC fine. I've tried USB Loader 1.4, USB Loader GX and uLoader. I found a website saying to install cIOS 222.

I installed 222, and now USB Loader GX allows me to select which IOS version to use (249/222). If I use 249, the enclosure doesn't detect. If I use 222, it does detect and GX will show the games on the drive. If I tried to load the game it won't work. Just kind of half freezes. The cursor still moves, and I can click hte buttons up to top to make noises but nothing else will click/respond. Home button doesn't either.

USB Loader 1.4 doesn't detect the enclosure at all, no option to use cIOS 222.

uLoader detects the enclosure, loads the game list and lets me load the game but it throws an error on a black screen with white writing "Unable to read the disc, press the Eject button power off the Wii, read the operations manual" etc. I think this is a Wii error - not a uLoader error.

I really just want to know if this enclosure is going to work or not, as it seems to be half working but its failing on game load for some reason. It was only $19 and I can go find a different one somewhere that might work but it would be good to confirm if this doesn't work and add it to the USB Compatible devices Wiki.

    Here is the compatability list.

If that means does the enclosure have it's power supply plugged in, then yes. The switch is on "I", not "O" also.

LOL just had IT Crowd flashbacks, "ok, is it plugged in?"

Right now, I can't decide if it will work or not - unless there is absolutely no other patches/updates I can do to the cIOS or other software.

It seems to be half working, just failing to load games from the loaders.

EDIT: I just remembered that when I start uLoader, it initially displays a "Couldn't initialize the USB subsystem" error with an error code 121

If you are on 4.1 or 4.2 you could try a game on SD card.
Its a low cost way of testing your setup/sofware. If that works its your HDD.

I guess I should have said 4.0 aswell. did you use the same loader to run it. If so no IOS to update, or loader updates. I guess you have cIOS 38rev14.

yeah i am using all the same loaders on the sd card. i am not sure if i am using rev 14 of cios 38. it could be rev9.

i downloaded cIOS38rev14 installer.rar extracted to my apps/ folder on sd card and ran from HBC. i selected to update cios 38 and did network installation. everything was a success exvept for installing custom IOS, i got error 2011.

From a quick google/forum read, I guess this may be from having 4.x firmware? Should I bother downgrading or is it safe to say my cheap arse hdd enclosure is not worth the trouble?

    Don't downgrade
    Try this
if you get error -1 when installing cIOS38 rev14, then try putting ios38-64-3610.wad on the root of your SD card.
